Thanks I needed the answer for another forum where a guy was tellimg people that it was only a half ton 10 bolt.

There is few undercarriage items that the H2 shares with half-tons. Most of the components that the H2 shares are from the 3/4 and/or 1 tons.

Here is a correction on the ring gear size of the rear axle per the service manual. It is not the heavy duty 10 1/2" version, but indeed heavier than the 1/2 ton truck axle. Hope this helps.

BTW, the front axle is a 9 1/4" and shares some bearings with the rear.

Rear Drive Axle Description and Operation
Rear Axles for this vehicle consist of the following components:

Differential Axle Housing
Differential Carrier
Electronic Locking Mechanism
Right and left Axle tubes
Right and left axle shafts
The H2 uses the 9.50 inch ring gear axle. This type of the axle can be identified by the stamping on the right side axle tube. It may also be identified by the ring gear size. The locking differential information for this rear axle can be located in the locking differential section.

This differential has a set of 4 gears. 2 are side gears and 2 are pinion gears. Each side gear is splined to an axle shaft so each axle shaft turns when its side gear rotates. The pinion gears are mounted on a differential pinion shaft, and the gears are free to rotate on this shaft. The pinion shaft is fitted into a bore in the differential case and is at right angles to the axle shafts. Power is transmitted through the differential as follows: The drive pinion rotates the ring gear which is bolted to the differential case assembly. The differential pinion, as it rotates with the case, forces the pinion gears against the side gears. When both wheels have equal traction, the pinion gears do not rotate on the pinion shaft because the input force on the pinion gear is equally divided between the 2 side gears. Therefore the pinion gears revolve with the pinion shaft; but do not rotate around the shaft itself. The side gears; being splined to the axle shafts, and in mesh with the pinion gears rotate the axle shafts. When the vehicle turns a corner the inner wheel turns slower than the outer wheel which slows the rear axles' side gear. The rear axle pinion gears will roll around the slower moving rear axle side gear; driving the rear axle side gear wheel faster.

Phil...

I can't say forsure what size the rear axle is as I haven't had the cover off of one and I have been burned before trying outguess GM. You pretty much have to go by the Bill of Materials code stamped on the top of the axle tube to be sure. I do know that AAM makes quite a few components for GM and if you look at the castings such steering parts you will see AAM cast in to them as well. I also know that the front and rear differential share alot of components such as bearings and Eaton tells me the front and rear lockers share alot of parts also.

I am getting ready to see if what Eaton told me is true as I have to look at my front locker. It didn't work last time I tried it- shows to have a open in the stator coil assy. Its either a broken wire inside the housing or a bad coil. I couldn't order a replacement coil from Eaton (backordered) but they did tell the rear coil is the same size. Only difference is the bracket that is tack welded to the front coil. I ordered a rear replacement from Hummer and will let you know if it fits with the modification.
