I noticed something the other day when I opened the hood....There is no light under there... Anyone think about this or has done this already and have some pics? I am curious as to what to use and where to place, wire, etc.... Just a thought....

Hey BADRAP:
I may take my old DRL's and stick them under the hood with a switch.
Actually, the early H2's had a hood light in the center of the hood, see pic. That's GM...saving the big bucks and taking away our everyday conveniences.

I don't have a light either, really cheeses me off. I've though about just mounting a tiny cheap mirror or other reflective surface to the inside of the hood, then just turning on my roof lights, should brighten up the bay http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

I have two lights under my hood .... one like in the photo and another down near the bottom of the oil dip stick mounted somewhere either on the frame or on a support of some sort ... I have a very early H2 .. #146

Hmm, that's funny. Older GM trucks ('88-'98) had a removeable underhood light that had a 10 or 15 foot reel-in cord on it. Maybe you could get one of those from a boneyard or the dealer.

12450086 comes up as a hood light at gm parts direct. Sells for about $8.00 each. Now thats affordable. I hope it includes all that is needed to mount it and hook it up. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif BIG-C

Hey Blg, I went to the web site and realized I visited that dealer while in Atlanta. I was actually about 200 miles from you on June 22. I was invited by Carl Black to their Hummer Happening and went off roading at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. were you there by chance. I do have pics and will post soon. The great thing was that I was supplied a new Hummer for my driving pleasure.

Well, I did it.
I got to thinking about why H2's don't have any sort of lighting like they did back in the early days. I liked the retractable GM light unit they had in the trucks so I ordered one off of eBay and when it came in, I installed it and it works great!! ($30)
First, I had to look for a place that would be functional without having to modify anything under the hood. The best place I found was on the passenger side between the factory air intake filter housing and the radiator overflow tank. I drilled 3 holes after marking them on side wall of the engine compartment, used 3 sheet metal screws to mount the retractable light.
Then came the wiring; it only has the 2 wires for it so I bought some 24 gauge wire and 1/4" wiring loom to cover it all and spliced in a 5 amp in-line fuse on the other end by the battery. I ran the wiring across the front of the engine compartment atop the radiator shroud behind the mounts and around the battery. I then placed a wire terminal loop on the ends of both wires and attached them to the battery.
Then came the testing. Once I had the wires neatly loomed, wire tied, and tucked away, I walked back over to the passenger side and pulled out the light and flipped the switch and BINGO!! We have light under the hood of the H2!!!!!
This was an easy job and not much $$ for a couple hour mod. Fun to do too! Just thought I'd share this with the H2 community so they all know its possible to do.

Even if the H2 came with a light I think it would be useless since the hood opens so wide and to the front. Harbor Fright sells small LED battery operated portable lights that both a hook and magnet for under $3 each. they work great and you can move them around into the right angle or position.

man oh man, we've gotta get that stock airbox out of that bad boy :beerchug:
nm my next question, I found the light on Ebay.
I wonder if you could throw an LED in it to make it much brighter? For $30 its almost a mod just to do to say you've done it lol.

I got an Airaid filter inside the stock air box. I hated those OEM paper ones.
I suppose you could put an LED bulb in there, as long as the socket fits and its the same size LED, becuase that plastic cover has to fit over it. (I never even thought of an LED till you mentioned it).
