It's not really appropriate to call this a "thread" anymore. It's morphed into a chat room. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Its funny to see all these sheilds on the h2's, thats what I love about my h1, I can role it, crash it, scrape the crap out of it, and its still looks the same.
(the above is fictional) </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
All hands please note: When communicating with an H1 driver, it's important to speak to him/her in a language they understand.
For example, there's a correct and an incorrect way to convey morning greetings:
Incorrect: "Good morning."
Correct: "Good morning, may I help you?"

Take a look in the photos section in the muddiest truck thread. See the second pic? See how high the splash is? No way we'll be able to suspend a rope that high from flat ground.
That means I'll have to make the subjective decision. Ergo, the bribe line is now open. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, I did see that one and asked about it here on the forum but I got a big NO!!
I can understand why though because the items that I want to put in it would be staying there permanently and I would want to have them locked in and secured to the vehicle. I also want to be able to remove it when camping so there is room in the vehicle to sleep.
I'm not needy, am I?

Toots, check this out. This is a steel tool box made by delta. It's pretty small. You mount a bracket to the floor of truck bed, install the on the bracket and twist the latches INSIDE the box. Then lock the box. It's not real secure unless you added hasps and padlocks on both sides so you wouldn't want to put anything really valuable in it. Also you could have it black spray on bedliner to make it black. The only problem would be the bracket is about an inch tall - you would have to have some pretty thick bedding not to feel it.

A quick pictorial history of The Mojave Road in 7 parts..... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
PART ONE
The Mojave Indians created a "footpath" thru the desolate and difficult desert as a trade route with Indian tribes on the coast. They found enough natural springs to make the trip survivable and, when the white man came, they showed him the way. Ancient Indian petroglyphs (estimated to be 2 to 3,000 years old) are still visible at some of the springs along the way! Men like Smith and Fremont and Carson made the first "maps" and writings of the route. This cooperation between the Mojave's and the white men would not last long. It would become a very dangerous journey due to both the harsh conditions - and the Indians who would regret showing us the way....

PART TWO
More and more whites came. On foot, on horseback, and by wagon train. Where the distances were too great between springs, we dug wells. Army outposts were established at some of the springs and wells to keep the Indians away. These outposts were harsh, difficult, and lonely. The highest desertion rate in the history of the US Army was established at the outpost at Rock Springs!

PART THREE
Then the trains came. And the road all but died for awhile. This Tonopah & Tidewater Line ran from about 1906 into the 1930's. During WWII, the rails were torn up to feed the war machine's need for steel. All that is left now is a strange berm in the desert - and an occasional railroad tie in the middle of nowhere!

PART FOUR
Homesteaders came - and some of the first automobiles tried "The Road." The conditions were almost impossible - including this snowstorm in the early 20's! They tried ranching and farming with little success. Most claims that were established were eventually abandoned.

01-29-2006, 02:44 PM
PART FIVE
Several booming cattle operations were eventually established and FLOURISHED from just after WWII until the Clinton administration put an end to it. The corral behind these cowboys is still standing - and we'll drive right past it!
Bondage
01-29-2006, 02:47 PM
PART SIX
As more and more uses were restricted, the road died. It was rediscoverd as a recreational trail as off-roading began to grow in popularity in the late 60's and early 70's. Though those on the left would like to throw all vehicles out and preserve this land so that future generations can't enjoy it either http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif it is, for the time being, open for travel. Whoops - this guy is STUCK! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

PART SEVEN
As far as I know, there has never been such a caravan of HUMMERS as we are going to take across The Road in two weeks. WE will write the next - but hopefully not the FINAL chapter in the history of The Mojave Road. And Feinstein and Boxer can go straight to hell.

Metal can?
Because you have 4 inches of rack depth, you can probably put your can on one of its big sides and ratchet-strap it in place. A rubber cushion between the can and rack will keep it from slipping and will protect your rack from scratches.
Or you could buy Garvin's J-can rack, which is similar to what I was building today. What I built will work but I'm not real happy with it so will likely pursue version 4. My SUT bed rack is only 2 inches deep. For a variety of reasons that are too complicated http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif to explain, that's giving me some headaches.

Don't worry about the rocker bars - you can drive the whole Road and not really need 'em - unless you wanted to do some of the more difficult side stuff you really will be fine without them.
On an H2 I highly recommend the shields. An H3 just may be narrow enough to squeek by untouched. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
And about the low hanging Joshua tree branches....I wouldn't want a can of fuel sticking up there.....

I've driven through much tighter spots (some full of dead growth) and have yet to get a scratch that can't be waxed out (by the mobile detail guy http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) so I probably won't put the shields on. They are a PITA to put on!

That's pretty cool. Wouldn't work on a H2 with its 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern. Edspad, if you take a look in the H3 tech thread you'll probably be able to figure out your bolt pattern based on what kind of aftermarket wheels people are buying.

Quahogs wear pale merkins. They wear leather ones with spikes when staying at the Bun Boy.

RacerX's real name is Minute Man.
HummerLV likes the radio clip of the Hindenburg disaster.
RonB's nickname should be Chatty Cathy.
Toots is addicted to E-Bay.
Edspad is going to die a horrible fiery death at the hands of a Joshua tree.
We are going to have a very memorable time on the Mojave Road.

Sorry - To clarify I am coming from San Fran Bay area (about 7 hours north) and my friend is coming from Ramona (In the hills above San Diego). Not sure what route he will be taking but I will be coming down I5. Haven't done the map research in exactly what highways I'll be taking after I5 since I will be inputting my destination into my GPS and just following what it tells me to do.
I will email him today and ask him what route he is taking. I directed him to this thread to catch up. He read a bit of it and now he;s all stoked to go...LOL Must mean you guys (and gals) sound like fun.

Hey RacerX and Beavis (what're you doing Racer, trying to get your name changed from Minute Man to Butthead? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) are you two planning on coming up/down Friday evening?
There is an odd little store at the Afton Cyn. exit off the 15. The owner and "emplyees" seem like a bunch of recovering alcoholics, bet they are really good guys! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Typical desert folks. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Seriously, there is a ton of parking there and never any customers. LOL If you pull in and talk to them, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you left your car there and that is right about where we'll end the Road trip!
After meeting there, Racer would backtrack N on the 15 (don't you guys dare go down and pre-run Afton Canyon first! DON'T DO IT!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif)to the Nipton Rd. exit. Turn right onto Nipton Rd. and go 31.4 miles to US95 south. Go south on 95 for 43.5 miles and merge onto I-40East/95S via the ramp on the LEFT. This will take you to Needles in about 8.5 miles.
Izzat clear as mud? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Most likely... Though its a little early for the good stuff to pass on through, lot of unusual types nest in the Joshua Trees and surrounding habitat.
Little background info, Got a biology degree from Univ. of Oregon, love nature, and tried at one time to become an independent birding/nature guide in Southern California.
Last time I was up that way, I saw a red fox (no not Redd Foxx) in broad daylight which was pretty cool.
Might see desert tortoise, tarantula, prob. too early/cold for snakes and for sure coyotes...

Everytime I go out looking for Bighorn sheep ( in Anza-Borrgeo Desert State Park), I never see any...
When I'm not, they seem to come out of the woodwork. Go figure

Good grief, I'm not suggesting people drink and drive. That's obviously a bad idea.
I can't say with assurance what Phil meant by the "no alcohol on the trail" point but I'm fairly confident that refers to driving on the trail. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
I deleted it because I realised after that you meant AFTER the trail.
And because I did not want to look like a "No Alcohol on the Trail" nazi.
But I kinda am http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

'Tis what I figured and couldn't agree more: drunken Nazis have no place on the trail. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
All this talk of booze and I don't even drink. At all.

And now I would seriously like everyone to post a single pic of their rig. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif There have been so many pics posted of so many rigs, I don't know who's who and what's what! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif I wanna put names with rigs - until I meet you all and can affix a face!
Mine: (with any luck the wheels will be powder-coated and the new brushguard will be on in time for the run!
