I'm thinking of putting the spare tire up on a roof rack. Is this better than the rear from those of you that have done both?

Don't even think about moving the nest to the roof, the shy spotted owl will leave it's babies if you even look at the current location.

Wow, how can you kill the innocent baby spotted owls just becuase you want to move your spare!!!!

Due to my overwhelming guilt, I spent the entire day catching mice and, one by one placing them around her tree. As a matter of fact, I've even gone as far as to gather up the cats in the neighborhood (for you ofcourse) to collect, bring to heights unknown and drop to the ground for dinner!! Yuk!

Did I make the ol' mighty Alec happy with keeping the shy spotted owls content and fed??? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm tired from all this work and now, I want to know about my spare tire!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The rear carrier is a bit of a pain but my garage and the parking garage at work are to low for a roof mount. Keep that in mind. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I have the rear mount and love it. It really comes down to how much you take it in the rear. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif If it’s an every day occurrence than you may want it up top. I also like the look with it on the back.

So at this point everyone reading this is thinking it, so I will ask. The question is, Just how often do you take it in rear? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Having the rear tire carrier save my life in a auto accident.

I was hit right in the ass end of the Hummer by a drunk driver at 60 + MPH. I was stop at a red light.

If it was not for the tire carrier being on the ass of the Hummer I would be Dead.

I have a rear...took it off a while ago bcs I hate swinging it open every time I need to get back there. Considering a rack for the roof...or just throwing it back on the back for long trips...

Thank you for the responses. I'm tired of the tire in the rear being that I do take it in the rear alot!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Can't wait for the comments on that one!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll keep in mind the clearance issue although it seems to me that if I only put it on top when necessary, it shouldn't be an issue.

Any top racks that come highly recommended for both tire and additional stuff??

Hello Jennifer,

When it comes to racks, there are probably only 4 letters you need to know:

G-O-B-I

You absolutely get what you pay for in life. GOBI rack aren't cheap but they are 100% worth what you pay.

My rack is rock solid and feels like an original part of the truck. I can walk on it, stomp on it and no deflection. It's a rock.

I looked at other racks... and all of the others I looked at were flimsy. None of them would have survived last weekend's trees.

My 2 cents...

Jennifer, that tire must weight a ton, how do you do it to lug it around? I just don't carry a spare at all, I do have a tire inflator and a tire repair kit, and onstar. These tires are much stronger than the ordinary car tires, anyhow. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I think that I well just go without a spare when I'm in town. I have read all the post's
about the pros & cons of the tire rack. I cant put it on top because I cant get into the garage.
I will put it in when we are leaving town, or going 4 wheeling.

Mine's in the back. But it does make for one heck of a blind spot behind my head. Which isn't a very good thing. I'd rather have the blind spot though than the mount on the outside. It's just too much a pain in the arse.

I drilled 7/16" holes in the front squares where the factory off-road lights are mounted. Then used a piece of threaded 3/8"rod with a nut/washer behind the plate. In front, a rubber block about 1.5" thick then the jack, then a washer and nut.

The main problem with this set-up is that the hood won't open only 20% without removing the jack.

Best would be to mount it to the roof rack, but it won't fit in my garage. I know...neither will the tire, but it comes off between off-road events, and sits in the garage. If I can remember/find the time, I will try and get a close-up pic.

I am tempted to try and mount the jack just above the front grill lights, which are mounted, (using Harley/motorcycle chrome brackets) to the front brush guard. Don't know if the cycle brackets are strong enough to hold the jack.

Interesting Phil...how about a close up of the attachment.

Just thought of another place to possibly attach...the outside rail of the rear ladder???

Already is a bit too much weight with the ladder...need to find extra power plungers to replace factory's. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Absolutly no room for a spare up there but at this height I can get into any gas station car wash and parking garage etc.

I keep my spare in the back for the reasons Phil mentioned, i.e. the event of a flat http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. It's on my truck volt so does not leave much space, however this is not a DD anymore and groceries will still fit on the top of the spare or on the pasenger seats.

If I go camping with a lot of stuff I put it on top if I need I need the space. For a trip like Moab it will stay in the back. For a trip to the hardware store or Costco where I need space I take it out and take a risk

I can get it in and out of the back on my own easily enough but getting a 37 up top is a work out. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Hey Alec,

Do you worry about that tire becoming a 100+ lb missle if you have an accident? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
