So, SUT owners. Let's talk about this Slant Back deal.
I really want one (as I have mentioned 6000 times). After research and running into walls, I have come up with only one answer. My H2 brothers/ sisters and I will have to design one.
So there are some things to look into.
1) R&D.
Who has connections to professional fiber glass work and automotive glass? When I ask this I'm talking about Custom Work. Not Jimbob's glass shop. (unless Jimbob does custom work).
2) What options would you want?
Tinted/ plain glass. window defroster? rear Wiper? Automatic locking with remote?
3) Price?
there is a company (can't remeber the name off hand) who will not be producing one for the SUT but already has a conversion for the H1's. Their conversion starts at $3000.
On my truck i would like to see a high quality finsished product that will look OEM when finished. I would like to see it lock with the remote key fob only without an external lock and have a rear wiper and defroster. I would have it light up inside once the dome light is turned on with the truck or is opened. This can be done with door switches easily.
I know this would be a $3000 to $4000 project with all of those options. (Estimated) But once one is made and perfected cost should be cut in half for a prduction run.
I could have one made out of Alluminum Tubes for frame work and sheet metal finished with holes for glass, but this would be way to heavy. So fiberglass would be the way to go. I don't know anything about custom fiberglassing or molding for this either.
...let's talk about this.

Tim
Give me a call about this. I may have some options.
Did you ever try to contact the Hydrogen HUMMER people about theirs? They may be able to provide contact info for whoever made theirs.

Ken, I would love to, but I have no contacts there. Or know who to even look for to contact.
I have contacted aftermarket companies, pick up truck cap companies, and a few custom shops out in Cali.

The slant back on the Hydrogen HUMMER was done internally at GM, and unless someone pretty high up the corporate food chain decides to offer it as an SPO option there's no way to get one from GM. Now if your looking for someone that can do a top notch job and would like to do that project call Paul langlois, owner of Master Models and Molds @ 734-564-0524. He rode along with me in a SUT at Kinsalows last spring and we talked quite a bit about doing a slant back at the time.

I just received a call from HUMMER Corporate and they have NO PLANS to bring out the slant back top for the SUT.
I would be interested in one too....

Just did some checking, and a company called Wheel to Wheel in Troy Mi.(Detroit area in any case) did the actual model and tooling work on the Hydrogen HUMMER. I don't know if they "own" the tooling or GM does, but if W2W owns the tools they may be able to sell parts out of them.

I think, think mind you, that wheel to wheel inc is now combined or has something to do with the new tecstar-starcraft thing. tecstarinc.com and starcraft.com are both not working either.
Maybe, try again tomorrow.

Paul, what about making us a sample or a prototype? if you can provide a finished prouct with OEM or better quality and good functionality, I am sure you would have multiple if not many customers from this site alone.

We do loads of glasswork. The first one requires tons of work; all the others are strait out the mold. So as i have said before - first one is free, but you have to leave your sut at my shop for a few days. All others are $2000

This is the outfit that makes the H1 slantback kits:
http://www.calgoldproducts.com/
Also, I've seen another H2SUT slantback besides this Hydrogen one. It was on a yellow H2 Sut that I saw in Durango last October. It makes me think that the photo of the slantback above is not a "one-off."

Ok, I talked with TecStar today. Wheel to Wheel is there engineering division. The slantbacks that have been put on a couple of trucks and are both prototypes. They have to perfect those protypes before production.
However, I was told that their company is looking down the road to produce them. the nice lady that I talked to is checking into when and will be getting back to me. Tecstar puts packages together for different vehicles.
Sounds like that would be a great job to have!
I'll keep you all posted as word is passed along.
for those that are considering haveing one made from scratch may want to wait until I hear back how long it will be and how much they will cost.

tim can you post the number? maybe if enough of us call and request it, they will either a) hurry up production or b)definately produce if they still had some reservations...thanks for all the work!
Tim, are you close enough to be a "Test Vehicle"? That would be great.

They are in Michigan. rather than everyone calling, we should do a poll as to how many are interested in one and would purchase if not too costly. I'm hoping to hear something back soon with an answer as to when they will have a finished product. If it is too far down the road than I think we could all call. The lady that i talked to was very nice and informative. she said she would get back to me, so If we all call, I think that may cause frustration more than anything.
Keep in mind this won't be a low cost item. I could see this product going for 2 to 5K easily.
I think we should wait a few days and see what she comes back with. If it's too far down the road or the project is to be put on hold, those of us willing to drop some money and time into this project can start a PM and develope one ourselves.
...thoughts?

I missed the sidestep discussion. I actually like that look. Anywone know if the sidesteps disconnect from the rock rails? I would actually go with that if they did. Thanks for the pic. I'll do a forum search for that sidestep thread.
Dogg, they are built into the "Rock" rails to the best of knowledge. Nothing else has been posted about them being removable.

I have tried to get info on the fender flare and under door section. The 325X60/20's sling dirt up side bad. The price seems high for both $1100. I have seen some for less on Gstyle, HiTech and a few other. Not sure if they look as good as these on jstarproducts. Just started researching. Do You have access to larger fender and and bottom of door protector to stop the wider tires from sling crap?
Thanks

I saw the Truckin Magazine (April) and saw a remark in a section about Govenor Slant back under the Reader's Rap page 18.
Even though I have already called Tech Star and got Zero info for us to have one built, Truckin Mag said that Decoma Inc is resposible.

It's probably Bestop who built it. Bestop is a division of Decoma International which is owned by Magna International. The slantback top wouldn't be very difficult for them to do based upon what they are doing with Jeep hardtops...

Before we all heard of Tec Star (who claims to have built the Slant Back on the H2H) I had called different Cap companies. Bestop was the first since they made the cap for the Avalanche.
they said they had no plans to make one for the SUT becasue lack of sales.

THere is 3 or 4 that have been found. And that's it. They were all hand made and none of the companies invloved would step up to prodution without paying for tooling costs. A couple members here offered that they could make one, but nothing was ever done.
So make one! We're all waiting.:D

Man... I'm about tired of these threads that I'm at the point of doing something. :D Althought we're still booked up for a couple of months. Arrrgh. I'll see what I can do about doing some rearranging. Anyone willing to do without theirs for maybe 3 or so months for me to do this between projects and after hours? I didn't jump on this before because I really didn't want to hold up someone's SUT for such an extended period.
