So, I was in Utah last week visiting and figured I'd try out the rock rails from Rocky-road.com. I'm hoping to get the first test in on the Rubicon in a couple of weeks...so we'll see how they hold up. Here's a few shots...

btw. The guys in the shop were great. Don't remember their names, but they were really helpful, and explained what they were planning on doing etc...

Makes a great step for 4yo and up. My 2 yo really can't get up into the rig very well, although possible. I've thought about putting some no-skid pads on top for the step, but so far haven't needed it... Here's some of the "snow" we got while we were there. It melted pretty soon after, but stayed in the mountains... :)

Actually, it's at my bro-in-laws place. Just about 1/2 a mile up the street from BYU and towards the mountains. Beautiful area. :) We were headed to the BYU bookstore when it started dumping the white stuff. :)

Doc, I think those rock rails would be an improvement for most trails, as the stocks just do not make sense being flush with the body. I extended my stockers with spacers to achieve the same function.

I'm thinking yours are solid tubes? Otherwise I'd be very concerned in heavy rock-garden trails, since even the stockers with those wide "wings" still bend!

Too, when I had my stockers extended out that much, I could not pivot around rocks properly, and kept getting hung up on the rock rails.

Rubicon test coming up! :)

I believe the main tube is 3/16" tubing. Not sure about the round tube...but I'd imagine it's the same. Yeah, we'll see how they hold up on the Rubi. :) Hopefully, will discourage body damage... :D

Nice!:perfect10s:
Any problems with the fit or installation?

No problems with fit or install. I did discover however, that the rails need to be braced with gussets at the mounting bracket to the frame. If you compare the H3 rails to the H2 rails, you'll notice the extra bracing attached to the mount brackets on the H3, and none on the H2 rails. Other than that, they're great! Saved me from body damage on the Rubi.

My truck is at the dealer now having them installed. Only thing I did not like was the long wait for Rocky Road to make them.

They claim to be made from thrailer hitch steel. They are heavy.

Did they add additional gussets to support it?

I don't think so. Should have back from dealer and I'll let you know.

You did the Rubicon?;)

Awwwe.... just trying to increase my reputation here on the board. :jump:

Just take a look at the H3 rock rails on their website, and see how they're gusseted, then compare to the H2 rails. You'll see what I mean. My brackets were actually what bent, not any of the welds....we strengthened the brackets, but haven't added the gusset yet. I figured I would test it out on the trail to see if it will make enough of a difference. - of course, it's really only important if you plan on riding your rails for 3 days straight. ;)

No gussets. Not sure what they would help. Can't bend down or up. Gusset would be more for the rocks to grab. Dealer had to straighten all mounting brackets in order to get the sockets in. Love the new rails even though they appear to be shorter then the originals, especially in the back.

We leave a week from Monday. See you soon.

I have them but I havent put them on yet. How can I tell if mine have the gussets?

Bottom line, oldhiker's right....they're not gonna cause any serious damage. They will protect the vehicle. It would safe some $ if they could add a couple supports like the H3 sliders here - circled in yellow.

You can see that the H2 sliders don't have these extra braces....

And again, I don't think most people will ride the rails as much as we did on the rubicon....Some of the stock rails were even pushed up...

Thanks, mine are still wrapped up, but I might make that my project for this weekend.....Depending on how lazy I feel!

Doc, if you ran a line from the outside part of front to rear tires, how far beyond that line do the sliders protrude? Wondering if they expand the over all width of the H2 in total.

Thanks

I have these as well. So far so good. They do add a couple of inches of width, but its good because it keeps the rocks off of the body as you slide by or over them. They also provide a nice step w/o hindering off road ability. They attach in fewer places to the frame than the stockers, but so far they have worked well. Tellico will be the real test this fall.

Haven't looked too closely lately, but it shouldn't be any wider than the H2 already is even with the mirrors folded in....

Doc are you going to give a short review on the rails performance. Went to RR and did not find the rails.

http://www.rocky-road.com/rockrail.html

Go there and select the h2 super rails. That is the only way I was able to find the hummer stuff.

Doc's right, it dosent add width if you take the mirrors into account.
