Went to the local radio shack store and purchased a magnet antenna for $30. Does it provide the same reception as the firestik 4ft or is it better to get a permanent mount?

take it back. get a wilson 1000(Tests by Lockheed show the Wilson 1000 has 58% more power gain (http://www.wilsonantenna.com/w1000.htm#gain) than the K40*), the good old K40, or 102 in.stainless steel whip(not the fiberglass version) with spring and 18ft of coax and this setup will get below 1.5 on the your SWR's almost every day of the week.
But if you have over 3000 watts of power get the wilson 5000 it will handle 5000 watts am and 20,000 watts SSB.
get a SWR meter and tune your antenna to get at least or below 1.5 SWR's if you like your CB. other wise you will lose power from the CB over time.
