Is it normal to hear something pop for a lack of a better word when the wheel is turned hard to one side like you were doing a U turn. It is not a loud sound and it is not every time. Is this just how BIG AWD systems work. I know there must be a lot of technology in the drive line.

It could be a ball joint. The CV joints can make a pop typ noise, but they will typically keep making it as long as you are turned, and it sounds like yours just does it once?

A bad one?

Could it just be the size of the tires and one of them slipping on the ground?

I'm sorry! Yes, to answer your actual question; no, it is not normal to hear a popping noise from your front end. The tires wont be the issue for sure. The front diferential is an open differential, so the tires wont be slipping.

My money would be on the ball joints first. The differential could make popping noises, but only if something really bad was wrong. And then you would hear and feel it more than just while turning.

I would find a good front end shop and have them check out the whole front end. How many miles are on your truck?

A popping or tapping noise is usually a bad ball joint... I know, I'm having mine done next week :( My truck has 70k (and change) miles and the joints were bad when I bought it although they were probably making that noise around 65k. How many miles are on your truck? Big aftermarket tires would speed the wear on the joints too.

I have a clicking sound but it is not the front end at all. It is the torsion bars clicking in the new keys I have to lift the front end. No click prior to but we did confim it by changing the keys back. So if you have your front end tweaked up with the torsion bars that may be what you are hearing. Mine is a click from under the seats when there is a sudden change in loading on the front suspension.

prob your ball joints. i was out of the country for a bit and my wife missed her service apt. when i got back one of her ball joints had gone dry and started popping. i lubbed her up pretty good but to no avail. now i get to swap them out. but thats where my bet would be

I have not heard it in a while. I am thinking it was torsen bars making some noise.

Do you feel it in the floor under your feet? Could you also consider the sound to be like an oil canning sound? If so you might want to re-torq your body mounts.

I did my ball joints at 90Kish miles. In fact I have 110Kish miles on the H2 now and I think at this point I have replaced every single front suspension/steering component. I do a alot of offroad and I run 37's so i tend to wear things out faster than most.

I looked under the truck today and noticed that one of the torsion bar adjustment bolts is sticking out and the other is where i would expect it to be. I am thinking that the torsion key is not in the right position. I have not heard that sound in a while. I think I may have been hearing things. My truck makes all kinds of noises on the inside. I think its just the squeaky plastic thing I was hearing. Since I have only had it a few weeks we are still getting to know each other.

Mine was doing the same thing, specifically when I would put in gear and turn hard left, or hard right...popping noise most of the time. Was normally one pop, then again when I turned the other direction. Took it to the dealer today and it had to do with the cross-member, and there's a bulletin out on it 03-08-62-002I. You can google the bulletin number for more info...it fixed mine. Here's a bit from the bulletin:

Document ID: 2006229 #03-08-61-002I: Snap/Popping Type Noise Coming From Front of Vehicle (Remove Bolt-In Front Crossmember and Add Washers) - (Aug 27, 2007)

Subject:Snap/Popping Type Noise Coming from Front of Vehicle (Remove Bolt-In Front Crossmember and Add Washers)

Models:2003-2006 Cadillac Escalade2003-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe2004-2007 Chevrolet Silverado (Classic)2003-2006 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL2004-2007 GMC Sierra (Classic)2003-2008 HUMMER H21500 Series (½ Ton) and 2500 Series (¾ Ton) with Two-Wheel Drive

Condition
Some customers may comment on a snap or popping-type noise coming from the front of the vehicle. This condition is most apparent during hard left or right turns at low speeds. Going over bumps while turning may also aid in producing this noise.

Well they did the cross member fix, but the pops are still there..... Back to the dealer I guess....

I have an appointment Wednesday to have the cross member fixed based on the service bulletin. I hope my noises goes away. I only hear the noise when I am pulling in and out of the garage and the windows are down.

That's exactly when I was hearing my noises...then began hearing when pulling out of parking spots, etc... Probably started listening harder once I heard a few times!

Got her fixed yesterday. It was the body mounts that needed to be replaced. There is a bulletin for this also apparently. No details on this bulletin. Make sure that they test drive it....

What year is your H2? Was it warranty work? I have an 05 with an aftermarket extended warranty that I am hoping covers this stuff.

2008. So still under the first four year warranty. Not much comfort from me.... Good luck.

It was an interesting morning.

First, I was suprised that this was a $200 project. Half for parts and half for labor. Since it was not a saftey issue, I said no thanks.

Second, a thank you to Lou Sobh for not charging me the $95 diagnostic fee. After typing that, it seems strange that I would pay to have them tell me what was wrong with it. What are service advisors for these days anyway...

The part is 15567836. It looked like I could do this myself. Does the cross member have to be removed? I was thinking about just doing 1 bolt at a time instead of pulling the who crossmember out and doing them all at once. That way, I could just crawl under it in my garage and do it.
