If anybody has done this "mod" I would really like to see it since I dinged the lower part prety bad last week on the first cherry popping off road experience. You cant see the ding unless you get under the front. I know others would like to see the installed application. Thanks.

What would be the normal turn-around time if the skid plate was dropped off at your location in West Palm Beach? Or, do you offer that service?

Thanks, Ed

Bright-Lee mine is still as shiny as the day I got it!
I just treat it like the painted surfaces. Wash it with high quality car wash and rinse it then towel dry it. Nothing Special - Looks great! I get alot of great comments on it! Thanks Again for the Great Job and quick turnaround! Taking it off and puting it on is a 10 min. job tops.

Is the polished plate clear coated or protected in any way? I'm just wondering about long-term oxidation. Un-coated aluminum will ozidize to a dull grey-white layer.

Bright-Lee
05-04-2003, 04:49 PM
What you say is true if you don't maintain it. I polish parts on high end performance vehicles and have personally seen that raw aluminum can and does manitain without oxidation with simple care. Maintaince is easy with "X-Treem Metal Polish" and sealer. Anodizing prices will be available soon for those don't mind loosing some of the shine in name of protection and no maintaince and the extra cost. It also would give the option of colorizing the skid plate.

Bright-Lee
05-04-2003, 04:51 PM
P.S. Daily driving on Daytona Beach will require extra maintaince http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif I carry "X-Treem" if you have a problem finding it.

Bright-Lee
05-04-2003, 04:59 PM
I can't help but add that when aluminum is clear coated with laquer, apoxy, etc. it will fade and chip and a "touch-up" would require an entire restoration. Chaching$$$$$ Anodizing is the better choice for aluminum. Most people prefer the shine of the polish but some prefer the protection instead of the mirror finish.

maybe some day...
05-04-2003, 05:29 PM
Everything you say regarding loss of gloss (clarity), maintenance, having to strip and re-coat, etc is perfectly true. I was just curious because it hadn't been mentioned and many people would not realize that the finish requires maintenance.
I was taught how to polish gold many years ago and have polished fuel tanks on a race rig so I know what the maintenance is like!
As for anodizing, JMO, but it looks like crap as soon as it starts to get scratched and dinged up. I'm mainly talking about colored anodized finishes here. I'd avoid this on anything but a show vehicle. At least with the plain polished finish you can touch it up!
Thanks for your info!

So, if I get my skid pan polished by Bright-Lee and maintain it with "X-Treem Metal Polish" it will stay looking nice & shiny? Does "X-Treem" polish AND seal or do you seal the pan with some other product? How often would the maintenace be required if instead of driving on Daytona Beach your daily driving is around town on normal pavement?

Thanks, Ed

Bright-Lee

Well Ed, the sealer is part 2 of the "X-Treem" kit. It works like wax on your paint or Rain-X on your window. It works really well on aluminum as that is what it was designed for. Sealer provides a minumium of 1 month and up to 3 months of protection and requires no additional maintaince above routine washing of your Hummer. I have tested this on my aluminum rims at the mud pits and everything else comes out covered in muck except my rims and people are amazed. James

James,

Thanks for the X-Treemly helpful information... I'm convinced now that I need to drive over to the east coast and swap out my brand new skid pan for one of your highly polished units --- along with some of that miracle elixir: "X-Treem". You don't happen to give big discounts to dim-witted, impoverished Floridians, do you? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll be sure and call ahead when I can break away for a day... hopefully sooner rather than later.

Bright Lee: how would you compare X-Treem to Blitz or Semichrome or any of the other more widely known metal polishes? (more widely known to me, that is)

maybe some day...
05-04-2003, 07:26 PM
PS: I don't see a sealer on their product list. Are you talking about "Metal Majic"?

TheGoodHummerMan
05-04-2003, 08:05 PM
Or what about using Luster Shield, available from the same people who distribute X-Treem... it says it will seal and protect your shine for "up to" 6 months.

Bright-Lee
05-04-2003, 09:49 PM
Metal Magic is the same stuff...all polishes work and most work pretty good (this refers to creme polishes). I happen to prefer X-Treem Metal polish because it polishes with minimal abrasions. Also, the X-Treem Metal Magic sealer is so far the best I've found.
Good Hummerman (gosh I hope I got your name right http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) It would probably be cheaper to ship it than pay for the gas money to drive over in your H2. Shipping for Fla. residents is only 15$.

Nope, I was talking about Metal Majic which is an X-treem product not any product under the metal magic name such as Blue Magic Metal Polish.
Never mind, I answered my own question by googling a little further: Metal Majic is indeed the sealer portion of the X-treem Products line.

Slight mistakes in my earlier post - Blitz should have been Flitz and Semichrome should have been Simichrome. What can I say, it is several years since I polished anything... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, if you put it that way, it costs me about $15 to drive down to the corner grocery; if I drive my H2 to the east coast we're talking way over 15 bucks... But, I wasn't thinking of making a special trip just to save money, more of a day-tripper type thing to enjoy the sights and enjoy the H2... But, now that you've brought up the fuel cost, maybe I will save the money and just ship it... This could start a trend of NOT driving and in a couple of years I could brag about having a REALLY low-mileage vehicle. Oh yeah, with a VERY shiny skid plate! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Guess maybe I should just wait until I'm ready for my first oil change, pull off the plate and ship it over to you. While I'm waiting to get it back, I could then leisurely change the oil and track down all the lube points hiding underneath the Hummer2.

Darn, I've never visited Palm Beach... Oh well. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The Goodhummerman, you are more than welcome to come on over to my side of the state. I'll add your Hummer to my portfolio http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe some day...You got it...that is indeed the stuff I recommend. FYI, I am fairly certain that the kit shown comes with smaller sized containers, hence the slightly lower price (versus buying them individually).

To everyone...I am sorry about my spelling. I have tried to proof read everything for you. My polishing is perfect, my spelling is not http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hey BADRAP,

Looks good, do you want a job? Can I send you some skid plates? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Did you polish all of the skid plate or just the front?
It takes me over 4 hours with commercial equipment, starting with 220 grit 3M gold, to polish a skid plate. The finished product is a show quality mirror finish.
Much of the work that I do is for show cars, trucks, & bikes. Oh yea and boats too.
I have spent countless hours sculpting welds on stainless steel, grinding and polishing pipes to a mirror finish in the engine room for only the captain, and mechanic to see.
Or sometimes my work is displayed in a museum or at a show for all to see.

In any case I applaud your effort and the results, I hope that if other h2 owners don’t send them to me to be polished they will get out the rags and start scrubbing, it just looks so much better.http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

You gain access to the bottom of the engine and transmission by removung the skid plate. For example, in order to reach all of the zerk (grease) fittings you MUST remove it, as well as when performing oil changes etc.

The purpose of the skid plate is to protect the vulnerable underbelly of the H2 when offroading. Or maybe when onroading if you drive over giantic curbs. Removing the skid plate should not be any problem whatsoever as long as you do not drive over anything high enough to hit the bottom of the Hummer. I left mine off for a week and never even thought about it, except for noticing how much better it looks with the skid plate in place. But, if you want the skid plate to REALLY look nice, send it to Bright-Lee for polishing! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

He does fantastic work and I am glad I had him polish mine...
