View Full Version : Express Sunroof WORKS!

I've noticed some interest in the express sunroof on some of the newer H2 for '03's. Here's a link to a product that may work if any are interested.

Got it today, installed & works GREAT! One touch & it opens all the way. One touch & it closes. One more touch & it tilts open. Just touch anywhere while it's traveling & it stops there. Great upgrade for only $40 bucks plus shipping. Here's pics & some hints to shorten install time. Oh I need to add to the install instructions the processor is small enough to just lay inside the overhead console. Enough foam it won't rattle. My H2 is an '03. Confirm the wiring in your H2 is the same before making connections.

I have an 05 and it has express open and express close so the techline is wrong. My 05 was built in October. It was delivered to the dealer and I brouhgt it home the day after it arrived. I must have a fluke or something.

So vette & tim. Just in case I decide to try this mod, one touch closes the roof and if you touch it again it does the tilt open?? I'm pretty sure the product I found will work for open/close but just wondering about the tilt open part with express.

Okay...so I am feeling left out...
I have a 05 SUV and one of the first bitches I had was that the sunroof did not have an express open or close. Its a pain it the ass since it is quite a large sunroof and takes a LONG time to open and close while you are waiting there.
Is this somthing I am suppose to have??
My 02 Denali had an express open sunroof and I thought it was kinda odd that the H2 didnt.

so i take it that the sunroofs are factory.i had my parts guy compare parts from 03'04and05 the only difference was that in 05 they changed the motor and sunroof control module.but if i go to tecline and check the description and operation and repair procedures there is no mention of an express open option?
89vette
01-31-2005, 04:25 PM
Yes mine is factory. In Express close mode, if you simulate getting your head caught in the opening, it will reverese and go all the way open.
Las Vegas, since mine is factory I'm not sure how to answer your questions.

Checked with AutoLoc this morning. They talked with their tech support and assure me this will work with our sunroofs. Also, the little processor is only about 1" thick so hopefully it will fit inside the roof console making a very easy install. I ordered one and will post the results with install info later this week.
intimidator, If I read your post correctly, I should be able to purchase the module and switch for some '05's and change them with the ones on my '03 and have an express roof. Is that correct?

What I don't understand is this is sooo simple....just a $5 circuit board that senses the higher electrical load when the window/sunroof stops & then disconnects. Hummer could probably include it in the module or switch for $1.00 Go figure http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Well Vegas what the heck is going on with You. The detail of instruction for this instalation is way below Your normal instruction quality. I mean You have a whole herd us of that have come to expect a much more from you. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif May i suggest that even though a child should be able to figure out what You have discovered for us that perhaps You post another thread to cover the install in more of a step by step to help make the job even more easy. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
But, I leave it to You as to whether You can tolerate the poorer quality instruction. I'm not saying bad instruction but poorer compared to You normal level. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I can live with it if You can. Many thanks for the effort to solve this problem. I ordered Mine today so I have 5 to 7 days to wait on it so that gives You time to improve the instalation directions.
Thanks for all Your effort and help!!!
I also talked to Tim he is ready for everyone.

hey vegas great install the only problem i see is that if you have a problem with the sunroof while under warranty it gives the dealer an out.and i know those sunroof repairs can get very expensive.so to solve this problem i would try to connect the module in a manner so that it can be removed easily if you have a sunroof problem. just my 2 cents.

Sunroof Description and Operation
Power Sunroof System Components
The power sunroof system is a tilt/slide style, consisting of the following components:
Sunroof actuator, control module included
Sunroof switch
Sunroof window
Sunshade
The rail and track assembly upon which the sunroof window rides
Power supply for the sunroof actuator motor and Retained Accessory Power (RAP) relay: SUNROOF 25 A fuse
Ground G203
Power Sunroof Operation
The power sunroof will operate with the ignition switch turned to Accessory or RUN. Once the ignition switch is turned to OFF, from RUN, the sunroof will continue to operate until any door is open or when the Retained Accessory Power (RAP) has timed out. For a complete description of the RAP operation, refer to Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Description and Operation in Retained Accessory Power.
Use the rocker type sunroof switch to command the sunroof to :
Open
Closed
Vent
Pressing the sunroof switch rearward, the sunroof window will slide from:
Vent position to the closed position
Closed position to the open position
Pressing the sunroof switch forward, the sunroof window will slide from:
Open position to the closed position
Closed position to the vent position
To Slide Open
The slide open function will work when the sunroof window is in the closed or partially open position. To slide open the power sunroof, press and hold the sunroof switch rearward. This will apply an input to the sunroof actuator motor from the sunroof switch open contacts through the sunroof switch open signal circuit. The constant input, allows the sunroof actuator motor to control the opening of the sunroof window. From the closed position the sunroof window will lower slightly, then slide open, rearward, with the sunroof sunshade between the roof and the headliner, stopping at the comfort stop position.
From the comfort stop position, an open request will slide the sunroof window approximately (1 in) 2.54 cm further open. The next open request will slide the sunroof window completely to the full open position.
To Close
To close the power sunroof from the:
Open position -- press and hold the sunroof switch forward. This will apply an input to the sunroof actuator motor from the sunroof switch close contacts through the sunroof switch close signal circuit. The sunroof switch close input at the sunroof actuator motor needs to be constant, switch pressed, allowing the sunroof actuator motor to control the motor to drive the sunroof window forward, until it reaches the closed position. To close the sunshade, this will have to be manually slid closed.
Vent position -- press and hold the sunroof switch rearward. This will apply an input to the sunroof actuator motor from the sunroof switch open contacts through the sunroof switch circuit. The sunroof switch open input to the sunroof actuator motor needs to be constant, switch pressed, to allow the motor to tilt the sunroof window down to the fully closed position.
To Vent Open
To open the power sunroof to the vent position from the closed position, press and hold the sunroof switch forward. This will apply an input to the sunroof actuator motor from the sunroof switch close contacts through the sunroof switch close signal circuit. The sunroof switch close input to the sunroof actuator motor needs be constant, switch pressed, to allow the sunroof actuator motor to control the motor to tilt the rear of the sunroof window upward to the vent position.
Limit Switches
The limit switches are within the sunroof actuator motor and supply data. The multiple data combinations allow the sunroof actuator motor to track the position of the sunroof window.
Sunroof Actuator Motor
The sunroof actuator motor contains the logic and is serviceable as one unit.

Where did you position your new control module in the overhead console? I have my XM radio tuner mounted in the front of my console and sits in a cut-out on the console. I guess what I am saying is that the front space of my console is taken up and am not sure if I will have room for the module.

Lost Wages, I wouldn’t worry too much about the “convenience” stops. You might even call them inconvenience stops. The first stop is about 3 inches from full open and the second is about 1 inch from full open. Now I could see if the first stop was 1/3 way and second was half way… that would be nice.
Now watch, everyone else’s probably does work that way and mine is just F’ed up.
Anyhow, I think after reading these posts, I’ll get one of these things. I hate holding my arm up for more than 3 seconds… it makes me sooo dizzy.

Put mine in today and it works well, but I noticed when it moves to auto close, it stops before it gets all the way in and does not seal. In fact when it opens it open relatively fast, but on close it’s slow.... If I assist the sunroof with my hand by applying pressure the sunroof will close all the way and seal.
Thoughts?

Thoughts?

I assume you are certain this didn't exist before installing the express module. If not, say so. With that said, the only thing that might cause this is low voltage/current - poor connections. The only other possibility would be a defective module but I doubt that. I would start by checking the wiring sequence per my install wire colors & their instructions. Be certain the correct wires are on the correct side i.e. motor side - switch side. Then I would check ALL the connections you made for good solid contact. Redo them if necessary. Did you use quick connectors? They can be a little tricky. If that doesn't correct the problem, bypass the AutoLoc system and see if it's still slow closing. If it isn't at least you've isolated the problem to the AutoLoc (or your install). You'll need to resolve this because continued use at low voltage/current can damage the motor. Nobody else has experienced this problem. Let me know what you find.

MNV1210 ... I've checked the sunroof wiring diagram and don't really see how the AutoLoc could cause the problem you're describing. Do the things above and let me know. Here's the wiring diagram.

Dear JMV210,
I haven't put one of these in, but will order one today. But it sounds like you are having a resistance problem. This could come from a few places. The sunroof might need lubrication or have a loose or bent part. There could be dirt or crushed leaves in the mechanism. The sensitivity on the WC1000's load sensor might be set too high or faulty. Not having seen one, I don't know if it is adjustable. You may want to ask the manufacturer. Otherwise, just tell them it is defective and ask for a replacement.
Dear LV,
Great installation detail. Thanks! Saves us all a lot of time & stress.

When I intially installed mine i had trouble with it opening but would close well. I did as Vegas said and went back with a meter and checked voltage at connections and the open side voltage would vary as I moved wire around. Rewired and worked perfect. The way it acted and having just installed i suspected My work first. The quick connects have for Me always been problamatic and I tossed them and went with inline connect to assure I had connections and all is OK.

Dear Taz,
Thanks for clarifying and owning up. This helps, since I just ordered mine. That Vegas guy, he's alright, huh?

Minor revision to wiring installation. See first post of this thread. For those that have installed per first instructions you do not have to change unless you want to. Will work fine as wired.

I'll put it this way tower. There are only about 6 or 8 guys on this site that I would do something the exact way they told Me to with out guestion and if they were not sure they would send Me to one of the others to ask them.
Jonahs is top draw in any of Our books who have come to follow His directions. Follow it as He describes and do not deviate unless You discover a particular problem isolated to Your situation. Then when that happens let Vegas know He will look into it or post and one of the others will already know or they will look it up. I would not list them myself as I would be afraid to leave someone out but, by the time You follow this site for 6 months You will see who to pay attention to. But, right now you asked about Vegas and listen to Him if he finds a better way he will revise which i notice He just did on sun roof install. So there you go My opion and until proven different I'l follow My on advice.

The garage door transmitter wire is always hot. But you still couldn't operate the sunroof with the ign off (except during RAP power) because the module/motor is not powered. Your AutoLoc would only be sending a signal to an unpowered module/motor.

I wonder if you are working it with your engine off. A couple of times this has happened to me and then I would start the engine and it would work fine.

Got it Jonahs and thanks. I have not had time to sit down and look it over but, you can bet when i get home from all the meetings today I will during the night. It is raining and ugly here today.
I'm having to drive My Baby in the rain today as My 99 Silverado is in detail since Friday. I do not rush Fred. Has got to be the best detail man I have ever used. He is finished but will not let Me come and get it in the rain. He said I can have it when sun comes out. I said Fred Your making Me drive My baby in the rain. He said well I take care of that when You come to get truck just leave H2 for the day and I'll get it right on the house.
Where and how many times do you find a guy like that. He takes as much pride in My H2 looks as i do. when i come every week for a hand wash he grills Me i fHe sees something He does not like. sap etc. or leaving outside and acid rain showing up on windows or paint. He is great.
Thanks Jonahs
