Re: Moving a Safe

Found a posting on another forum that has what I was thinking of!
http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/i...hp/t-8887.html

Found the Hand Truck they were talking about!
http://www.handtruckstore.com/hand-t...&key=WES230051
I wonder if someone rents 'em!?
Makes sense!

Why don't you drive out to Paragon then? That's where RIC_HO will be; not moving some safe around.

How did you get it up there initially?

Cause that would be a long ways to drive for a 4 day weekend. Also the my Xterra gets crappy gas mileage. Not H2 crappy...but still pretty crappy. The cost of gas would bankrupt me. :)

I actually moved it to my house on my own. Pushed it up to the bed of a truck, leaned it back, and slid it up. Lots of grunts and groans, and I think I may have farted!:D
Same thing to unload. slid it to about half way off the bed, and tetered it down as slow as possible. I then just scooted it into the garage!
It's still on the original pallet, so it slid on the smoothe garage floor.

I bet you can rent one of these and do it with a buddy.;)

They also have a motorized version.

I live on the 3rd floor of my apartment complex. My apartment has no balcony(No outside access for a crane).
My safe weighs 650lbs(empty).
The leasing agent, and their maintenance folks have approved for me to have the safe in my apartment(Weight limitations).
Want to know what a reasonable amount of $ would be to have it moved.
There are 2 flights of stairs, and the stairs are wide enough to move the safe all the way up.
I have been told there is a dolly that is motorized, that safe movers use for cases like this.
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Ric

As a Locksmith I do know that they do have a motorized dolly to move safe's. The dolly is made so it can craw up the stairs. As for the price, I think it is to high. As for the cost of moving the safe, I would say $400.00 to $ 600.00 Dollars to get it moved form a Locksmith Shop that will move a safe.

Check with some Locksmith shops in your area and see if you can get a better price on geting it moved.

If all fails, check with a equipment rental company, and see if you can rent a motorized dolly, and get a couple of friends to help you move it.

Thanks,
I think I will call a safe company, and get an estimate on the move.
This price is rediculous!
I'm thinking they quoted that price to my relocation company because they just don't wanna do the move, and would rather I pay for the move myself!

If I can rent a motorized dolly here in town, I would definetly move it myself. From what I've been reading about these dollies, it shouldn't be an issue for one person!

For that price I think I would just buy a new one.:)

Ric - even if you do get the motorized dolly don't underestimate this thing. At that weight, if it gets out of control no one guy is going to be able to stop it.

Better to be over prepared and just say "damn, that was easy" than to be under prepared and get hurt.

Don't want to rain on your safe-moving-parade... Just wanted to throw that word of caution out there. Hell, I'm looking forward to wheeling with you next weekend! That might be difficult if you smooshed like a pancake! ;) :p

Been looking for a quick weight reduction program anyway!:D

I may recriut a few of the Bubba looking maintenance guys around the complex, and offer them some shrimp on the Bar B, or a trip to a male targeted establishment!:D
I guess I'm not really one to ask for help. It feels good to say "I did it all by myself!"

Re: Moving a Safe

Ric, here is my uncles email reply.

Cross country Freight on that safe should run about
300.00. Having a local safe company move it upstairs would probably run another 300.00. With that many stairs at least 3 guys and a motorized stair climbing dolly to get it up there.

The moving company seems to be way out of line with
their pricing. Doing it as above is the best way. Him doing it himself is an accident waiting to happen.
Have him call me if he needs more info

Thank You so much...
It just confirms my feeling that they just don't wanna move it.
A good idea from another site that I visited was to remove the front door(Which is about half the weight of the safe!)
Or I can just leave it in the garage, and get rid of the beerator to open up a little space!

Thank You for your ideas, info, and troubles.
Ric
