There is that Rocky Mountain hard edge in the Colorado boys, a bit of dark streak attack mode, never know when you'll suddenly turn or go negative on you. Nice, keep me awake. I'll bet they are not Mormons, I have nothing but admiration for the Mormons.

Ya know...the funny thing is...the H1 guys and the Disco guys have something in extreme common: they both fiecely defend their rigs and adamandtly love them...BUT once you get past the resilient exterior you'll find a group rattled with maintenance, reliability and quality issues. |
A cross of tahoe/suburban maybey, but definetly not the escalade. in my eyes, the escalade is purely a comfort vehicle. close to no offroad capabilites and an extremely bulky body for its class. i hardly ever see them offroad anyways so why it would come into this even as a suggestion, i do not know.

I was told by "Bill" over at Colorado4x4.org (I'm new there as well) that I should get in touch with "Alec W." and "Adam in Co" because I'm looking for partners to off-road with when I come up from FL in late Aug and early Sept. When I mentioned "H1" over there, it was pretty much over...

I'm thinking of concentrating on trails in Chaffee and Gunnison counties so I'm thinking between Bueana Vista and Crested Butte especially since there's a trail which connects them over Schofield Pass? Never been on it although I've been in both towns. I am quite flexible although I would say that I was on most of the trails around Ouray and Telluride last year. |
The maintainace isnt that bad on the newer models, at least in my case, i haven't had one problem with it. Everything is scheduled and free on the '03+ models which is nice. Oh and just ignore the my rig is better than yours, its just childish!

I also have this same ? as quoted above: How reliable are the newer models? Later years, 04, 05, 06? The Alpha? Just curious - I would love to get a reliable used H1 down the road, assuming the newer models are more reliable than the older ones... -Matt |
Newer models are neccessarily more reliable than older years. '92's are really reliable from what I have heard. The 6.5NA and the 6.2L engines are really good but could be a little piggish.

The H1 factory recommended maintenance doesn't change from year to year - The '92 maintenance schedule is virtually the same as the '04 maintenance schedule. The H1 gets an "A" service every 3k, and "A & B" service every 6k, and an "A,B & C" service every 12k miles. These maintenance intervals are cut in half for "Severe Operation", so 1500/3000/6000 miles instead of 3000/6000/12000 miles. Here is a maintenance checklist for the A, B & C services: http://www.amghummer.com/Maintenance...duledMaint.htm The newer trucks aren't any more "reliable" per se than an older truck, although the N/A trucks seem to be more easily understood than the electronic engine management associated with the 6.5 TD engines. If you have an H1 that has been properly maintaned, and you continue to properly maintain it - you will likely not have any unexpected problems. Most H1 horror stories you have heard are associated with a "used" H1 that did not have regularly scheduled maintenance & the new owner is beside him/herself. Keep in mind that there are only a few hundred H1's produced each year, compared to 30,000 or so H2&3's produced, so the technicians and mechanics rarely get to see & work on them...making it take more time & cost more at the dealer. The H1 systems (geared hubs, ctis, etc) are unique, and dealers do not commonly "stock" very many H1 parts & are unfamiliar with troubleshooting these systems, making them tend to replace more than they need to so the customer can get back on the road quickly. Many H1 owners rely on the "Hummer Maintenance CD" and the HML & do their own maintenance because it's a very easy truck to work on & in many cases it's quicker to do the maintenance repair yourself than go to the dealer & wait for parts. You can see why many H1's are in ill repair - if you wheel on a regular basis (severe operation), just the C service needs to be done every 6K miles & the dealer cost is over $1,200 to perform it. I'm not particularly mechanically inclined, but I do all my own maintenance, and have not had any problems in 45k miles. I wheel with a group of other H1's owners that have had similar experience. Good luck, there are several resources to look into before buying an H1. Get a good one & enjoy it! |
Ive had my truck for almost 3 months and have put about 4k miles on it, i have not had one problem with the truck and i have taken it offroad several times. I plan on upgrading to an alpha next summer if the price falls under 100k. Take into account that '03 models and higher have scheduled maintance so almost everything is free!

I got it in PA coming back through after buying the HMMWV. The place was so-and-so's Surplus and he had a bunch of them (about 4 years ago now). They seemed really cheap and it fit on top of the HMMWV being pulled so it was an easy get. I put a couple more pics of it on the H1 Gallery that I made, today.
