I have gone on the rubicon a few times but with my jeep. How many days do you guys plan on to complete the trail? I would like to come along.
Dan |
Drtyfn you won't be taking the H2 thru the little sluice but there is a bypass for that but even so it is a hard trail and you had better be prepared for body damage. there are some spots that are pretty narrow.

stay out of the water...thanks for giving ammo to those who want to shut down the trail

This was some good advice:
The Rubicon Trail is threatened with closure! We must do our part to ensure that no one has a reason to close our trail. But it is constantly under the microscope of governmental control agencies and environmental groups. It is also one of our crown jewels of recreation. We must use it right; or lose it. Here are some suggested guidelines for using the trail. 1. Stay on the trail. Never get off the trail. Do not camp some place where you have to make a new trail to get there. 2. Leave no trace. Air down; drive slow; and don't spin your tires where you don't need to. Stay on the rocks. 3. Follow the established route. Do not create a new route or bypass. 4. Be courteous of other drivers. Don't hold up the line and upset those behind you when you don't need to or have an alternative (such as getting out of the way). 5. Pick up trash you see along the trail. 6. Talk to other riders/drivers about their bad habits if you see some. 7. Never drive into or through wet areas or meadows. Stay on the trail that avoids these sensitive spots. 8. If your vehicle breaks down, try to limp it out of the way as soon as you can so as to not hold up those behind you. Every one is on a schedule these days. And no one likes to be held up. We all want to get as much fun in as we can in a short period of time. Be thoughtful. 9. Obey the law. 10. Don't drive over vegetaion or make mud holes worse. 11. Help a wheeler in need. 12. Have fun; be safe; but be smart about our future. Thanks , Del You guys talking about #7? ![]() |
You have said it the best way ... no one could have said it better. Thanx ...

Thanks for the links, Cranky.
One thing that I've noticed about off-roading is that the Hummer crowd seems to take things slow and steady, while the Jeep crowd will take the hardest route possible, just to do it, and bounce, claw and tear up the trail in the process. This is what I saw this weekend at Brown's Camp. Jeep after Jeep would approach an obstacle, and instead of straddling the hole, they would purposely put their tires into it, try to crawl out of it and then proceed to gun it, throwing dirt and rocks everywhere. I've also seen this in a few off-roading videos. Bottom line: We've ALL got to stick together and take care of the trails. When you see someone tearing things up, going off trail, littering or not observing trail etiquette let them know. If they don't listen- report them. |

Thanks folks for receiving the info well. I'm not a Hummer guy, I drive a 85 Toyota. As far as drivers of a certain brand behaving a certain way ..... come on, that's unfair, and a very hasty generalization. Anyway, thanks again for letting me add some value to your site. Here's a pic of my old Toy:

Sign up here. EL DORADO COUNTY -- A 28-year-old Wilton man was killed early Saturday when he apparently lost control of his vehicle along rocky Rubicon Trail, an El Dorado County route popular among four-wheel-drive enthusiasts. California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jim Faria said the accident occurred about 4:10 a.m. Saturday, just east of Loon Lake and Ice House Road. Faria said the man, whose identity was withheld pending notification of family, was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from a Toyota pickup and the vehicle rolled over him. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as an Elk Grove man, 32, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, Faria said. |

cool, my first post. First off, anyone CAN make the trail - but the trail starts further than you guys went, I can take my car to the look out
![]() For more info on the trail check out http://www.rivercityrockcrawlers.com...n/Rubicon.html I'd love a hummer, he he no seriously that is a lotta dough to go wheel with! There are a lot of other trails around to get your feet wet with. The rubicon has got to be the highest profile trail out there, so we would all appreciate it if you do go that you do NOT make any bypasses and leave the trail as it was before you were on it. here are some pics from last weekend http://www.rivercityrockcrawlers.com...Name=cleanup03 For a fun run I would suggest coming in from the other side and camping at wentworth springs (nice quiet campground) then you can go as far as you can from there. It's a great trail, if you guys do go I'd love to come and help/guide! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
just curious - are any of you guys local to sacramento? If so we'd love for you to come out to our meetings and we will be planning hummer friendly trips!

Dan,
I think kdio learned his lesson. We've all made bad judgements before. I'm sure there was a time when you did something silly or irresponsible that made others shake their heads. P.S. Why did he take a bath? Lucky he didn't slide back all the way like that poor sap in his Corvette at the boat launch. He ain't heavy..... Hello all! My first post here as well. I was lured by the prospect of you guys on the con and have always been intrigued as to how well Hummers will do up there. I appreciate your guys' acceptance of the valuable info offered earlier in this post and welcome you to join and participate in F.O.T.R.'s actions in preserving our beloved trail.

I am talking with my buddies about when we will actually get up there, where we'll stay Friday and when we'll hit the trail Saturday. As soon as I've got the info I'll post it. Looking forward to seeing everyone up there. |
Yo Keith, that's great you guys may be on the trail these guys want to run it, i'm sure RPS will be a big help to add to the fun! Take pics!

Keith,
thanks for all of your help. I know that we'd really appreciate someone with experience on the 'con being there. How's the fishing up there? |
I just want to clarify the picture of the grey wagon (not mine) that backed into the water on the trail. I was with the group. There were 3 H1's and 4 H2's on this trip. We started at Homewood and went in. Before we got to the first split we met some Jeeps heading out. This spot is right on the main trail and looks like a boat ramp. There are no obstacles between Homewood and this point so it very likey was a boat ramp. I was running tailgunner up to this point, but after this was asked to run lead.
We practiced "tread lightly" and did not traverse off the beaten path. We picked up and carrired out much more trash than we brought in. |
I was in front of Blackhawkdown in my H2 up to the point that we stopped at what looked like a boat ramp. It wasn't Kdio driving the H1 in the lake that you see. And like Blackhawk said...it did look like a boatramp/launch.
Thanks Dax for the use of the CB and I look forward to more trips with you. Seriously, I'm looking to sell my H2 and buy an H1 now. Keep me informed on any deals. |

Last weekend we caught a couple of 6-8 inchers with a club guys son. It looks like RPS is trying to plan a run for that weekend. I think we all have something to learn about navigating protected trails. Unfortunately not all of that wisdom comes instantly or instinctively. Thanks for some of the educating input on this thread.
Our trip to observation point was incredible. The Hummer is a great machine to slowly travel this type of trail (when used wisely). Brian h2norcal@sbcglobal.net www.norcalhummergroup.org |
I feel the need to clarify and stress a couple things for those who haven't run the Rubicon.
First of all, some of the pics displayed by the newer non-H2 members are on the more extreme portions of the trail -- you will be able to bypass much of the extreme parts. Secondly, running the trail from Tahoe to Observation point is nowhere near as difficult as some of what you'll find if you run the entire trail -- it doesn't even come close. Going from the Tahoe staging area down to Rubicon Springs and back is a bit better...but still not as difficult as other parts of the trail. That said, I encourage you to give it a shot. I'm no Rubicon trail expert by any means, but I did run it a couple months ago with my "luxury-rice-burner" with some friends of mine. My tips: 1- expect damage. expecially to your rocker panels, rear quarter panels and possibly your front quarter panels. You could ding a door or two. The H2 is pretty wide and parts of the trail are pretty narrow (with no bypass). 2- bring spare parts. an extra tie-rod, axle, CV joint, driveshaft might be required. Extra valve stems for your tires might come in handy too. 3- get as much armor/protection as you can on your undercarriage. You'll have a blast as long as you go in ready for the possibility of carnage. Have fun. ... Doug |

Based on some "other forum" attacks in the past, we've all become leary of newcomers. AND other brands have their issues with figuring Hummer owners are a bunch of snobs & elitist who think they're better then everyone else. It's great to see we can all get along and rise above the little issues. I only wish Kelley & Melissa could be here to see this. In the end, we all just like to get out and enjoy the outdoors with our toys. ![]() I have a completely unique idea....why not celebrate this collaboration of multi-brand cooperation with some kind of national holiday. We could call it....say....."Thanksgiving" and we could celebrate it every...say...November, on the 3rd Thursday of said month? That shouldn't conflict with any other dates. ![]() ![]() Seriously...this is a good thing that I'm happy to see happening here. |
I glad to see this thread still going, and to also see the continued support from Wheelers no mater what brand rig.

DRTYFN,
Have you posted the itinerary? I'm gonna try to meet up with you guys but it depends on what your plans are. Sorry if I've missed where you posted this before but some specifics like when, where, how long, etc, will help me make the call. I live about 40 minutes from the head of the ruby but haven't quite bought in to running the whole thing yet. Thanks! Chris |
I'll have an itinerary this week. Tentatively we're going to meet up at Loon Lake Friday at around 1:00pm and then wheel up to Spider Lake to camp that night. We'll get up Saturday morning to start the 'Con. Not sure if we'll run the whole trail.
