Metal can?

Because you have 4 inches of rack depth, you can probably put your can on one of its big sides and ratchet-strap it in place. A rubber cushion between the can and rack will keep it from slipping and will protect your rack from scratches.

Or you could buy Garvin's J-can rack, which is similar to what I was building today. What I built will work but I'm not real happy with it so will likely pursue version 4. My SUT bed rack is only 2 inches deep. For a variety of reasons that are too complicated to explain, that's giving me some headaches.

Yea i was looking there, i was kind of worried about it fitting...i lost a fight to an old jerry can 1944 vintage. pretty rusty inside.
gave up and bought a new one, after my acid trick did not get all the crud out.

rodster 01-30-2006 01:51 AM

If it were my truck, I'd be reluctant to have the can standing upright on the roof as pictured. That's just screaming for a tree branch to whack it good. A flat mount -- however you do it -- would probably work best.

rodster 01-30-2006 01:55 AM

Edspad -- check out this can mount. You can mount your can vertical or horizontal with one of these.

Most likely it would happen in town (my luck)
or maybe the only tree for 25 miles in the desert

KenP 01-30-2006 02:03 AM

Just ratchet the cans down. They won't go anywhere.

Actually, we might encounter a few Joshua trees that big on this run! And when you head north with us on a future run, the trees can get tall and often hang over the trail. Fun, fun, fun.
