Aw! Wannabe?
![]() ![]() Laymans terms: First you want to make sure that the decay has not reached the point where you would need a root canal. Because not getting all the decay and proceeding with the crown ($1400.- +) would be a bad idea. You want a good base to set it on. Crowns are great and they are normally placed in two appts. The first one being a prep appt. in which they would drill it down to fit under a crown and take impressions. You will feel vibrations, and you may experience that mouth full of water feeling and have to sit with some crap in your mouth while it sets. Then they will put a temporary crown made of acrylic on the "nub" (if they are good it will be relatively close to your natural color) and that will remain until the lab has made your permanent one. They do have alternatives to being totally conscious, such as N202 (nitrous oxide=laughing gas) or a light IV sedation. But I really think you will be fine. The girls will laugh at you and call you a pussy in the back room. ![]() Does the drilling really hurt you or is it the thought? If you have a large filling in there already it won't be any worse than that was. |

Ahh... Dentistry Dentists. Hmmm.... they are what bought me my Hummer.
![]() Yer tooth is cracked, it needs to be fixed. Quit yer bitchin and get the crown. The alternatives are much worse. |
Dentists are kind of like Barbers..you keep looking around, try this one or that one, Until you find what your looking for, or give up and go with the False Teeth.

wannabbe,
I am a DDS in Syracuse, NY. It is interesting to read all of the posts on regards to your treatment. I agree on not wanting to have a crown or potential root canal to restore the mercury fishing weight in your tooth. I would seek out a DDS that is progresive and with advanced technology. I recommend having a CEREC onlay/Restoration (if it is possible) to replace the void the silver has left behind. This CAD/CAM restoration is based on an enamel-like porcelain this is milled while you wait (one appointment), metal-free, conserves tooth structure, bonded to your tooth (strengthens enamel and has similar physical properties that lessens post-op symptoms). A CEREC is less $$ to your out of pocket expense. This tecnology is a huge investment for a DDS to make that gives the greatest return based on the advantages listed above. The barber analogy is correct, there are very few high quality perfectionists that practice dentistry and are affordabble. Just remember "Garbage in Garbage out". The majority of patients are not educated consumers for their mouth, but they are for everything else. Ask qustions about you options. You should demand state of the art technolgy for your care! I Would. I own an H2 and H3. Demand the best, you are worth it! http://www.cerecuse.com Greg |
thats what im talkin about, thanks for the info! im definetly going to look around as im not too sure about this particular office i visited... the facility seemed a little rustic. Ill ask them what procedures they use, but she did mention they would have to grind the tooth, take an impression put a temp crown on and ship the mold to a lab and have them make the tooth then wait for it to come back and install it.. but if i could do it all in one visit that would be awesome! im a real baby when it comes to this!

did i mention im a baby?

You may want to look into getting several of them done at once so you can arrange a ride and lower your copayment. |
haha i was waiting for a volunteer! find me a dentist close to 98052 and one with new technology! schedule it for after 3pm!
|
Okay, here is a list.
It only gives directions though. There are some high tech ones in Bellevue, are you near there? |
yeah thats 10 minutes from me.. ill check it out when i get home from work.. i just found out my lame insurance only covers me for 50% of a crown... that sucks

I had a tooth mostly kocked out while playing hockey... They put a crown on top and it's all good... You have nothing to worry about...

Well, crud. I feel like I have to chime in a little more. In deference to Dr. Craybas, I think a couple of things should be clarified. First, and I think Dr. Craybas will agree, there is no way anyone can diagnose your problem and provide an answer without seeing you in the chair or at a minimum, seeing an X-ray.
A dental office that has a CEREC machine has invested several hundred thousand dollars JUST for the convenience to the patient and a little more direct quality control. CEREC capable offices do provide the same services as other offices, though. Just more precise and quicker. It sounds as though your Dentist sees a reason for a crown and even if you find another dentist that uses the CEREC, they might simply crown it also, only it will be a CEREC crown. You will still have to have the tooth prepped in either situation. Secondly, dentisty is NOTHING like a barbershop. People do not shop dentists. Those that do, are not good patients anyway. A dentist is a medical professional just like a thoracic surgeon. While it might not be life and death, the level of detail and the conditions that dentists perform their services is unlike any other medical profession. Well, I could go on and on but will digress. You don't get second chances on adult teeth. So you don't get to go "try out" a dentist and if you don't like them, move on to the next one. If you have to have work done, ask around. Ask someone you trust and find a dentist they use. The dentist with the most modern office and best equipment is not always the better choice. |
I once had a small crack in my tooth and had our family dentist in CA, whom my parents swear by, check it out. He said I needed a crown and was ready to do it right then and there, but when he couldn't tell me exactly which tooth was cracked I bolted... half-way home before the spit bib hit the ground.
Flash forward 15 years later (last year), crack has clearly gotten bigger and more painful, so went to a local dentist here in WA and he said I didn't need a crown at all and was explaining how dental technology had progressed so much over the last decade. Woohoo, I always knew it paid to procrastinate some day. I'm not sure what he did, but it was a much simpler procedure and the tooth has been great since. Maybe it was some of that nerd stuff that Craybas rattled off. Now, I have also heard some bad things about this particular dentist, so I'm not going to recommend him, but I do think a 2nd opinion is a good idea. |

Now, I'm speaking as an experienced patient, having done 1 crown & 2 crerec inlays the past 2 weeks.
No diff in hurt/discomfort, as they both require multiple injections. Once they kick in, you won't feel pain, other than the grinding/tugging/etc. But yes, the injections hurt like mutha... ![]() ![]() Given the option, definitely ask for Cerec. The crown requires 2 visits like CP said. The Cerec is really cool as you watch them manipulate 3D images of your cavity, "paint" in the filling, and PRESTO! an actual physical exact match in 10 minutes!! The crown cost me $1200. The Cerec $800 each. Yes, those are my share after the insurance.. ![]() But imho, worse than crown, cerec, or even root canal, is deep cleaning. If your dentist did not mention it, I would highly recommend NOT asking about it... ![]() ![]() |
I see why nature chose females to carry the babies.

No kidding. He would also randomly shut his practice down for weeks on time to drive a load of freight across the country and back every few months or so. Of course this is the same dentist that pulled ALL of my father's teeth when he was in his thirties because he had gum disease. If you are not comfortable with your dentist, like I said, ask around and get a recommendation from someone you trust. Approach getting dental treatment the same way you would your other medical treatment. |
