ALREADY????

I hope everyone in the south is prepared for what looks to be a very busy hurricane season. Just one week in and we've got what looks to be the first hurricane.

SUPPLY CHECKLISTS

Emergency Supplies
All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time.
Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:
  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:
  • Prescription medications and glasses
  • Infant formula and diapers
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container. You can use the EFFAK (Emergency Financial First Aid Kit) developed by Operation Hope, FEMA and Citizen Corps to help you organize your information
  • Cash or traveler's checks and change
  • Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper - When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Matches in a waterproof container - Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

Don't forget to fill your tanks with gasoline, maybe some propane for your grill.

Near Damage!

From the little bit of storm Orlando got today (probably early this morning around 4-5am), my stack of 5 rims against the wall in my garage somehow managed to fall over right in front of my truck! One even got under the front bumper, but no damage, that would've sucked.

Damn it! If only I had some of that Hurricane Tape, I could've prevented this. Has it been tested to hold items besides glass in place yet? When is it coming to a store near me?

A few Moving, Automotive, Marine and building companies are using it already on the commercial end.

But there is some red tape with the retail end right now.:(

Ahh, Hurricane season. Definitely don't miss it. Evacuated from Hugo and Floyd. I was going to add DEET spray and toilet paper (paper towel's just not the same) to the list.
Seriously, one thing I regret not having taken were my golf clubs as we ended up at Callaway Gardens escaping from Floyd. If you are going to evacuate, do not stop at some dingy Motel 6 to be price-gouge some exhorbitant fees! Plot your route to the nearest 4-stars resort where you and the family can get pampered for a few days. Believe it or not, this is not the time to save a few bucks. There might/will be some distress & horror when you go back after the storm blows by...

I am still waiting for the day that we start to get sponsored hurricanes.

"Here's hurricane Total Devestation brought to you by Home Depot and Honda generators".

Its already starting to look like a sportscast down here - the World Cup of Hurricanes - great television. I particularly love watching the muppet outside broadcasters standing in the windiest spot they can possibly find and telling us with a smile that we are all doomed.

Last year was hilarious - we had one of the local stations in Bahia Mar marina in Fort Lauderdale standing looking into the water telling us that the water level is now only one foot below these docks. They are floating docks - the water level is always one foot below them.

Idiots.

Re: ALREADY????

DAMN!!!!!!

That's a good idea. Let's get that rollin. Of course we could wrap it all up around the guise of Hurricane awareness but the main deal is to make some coin off of these things.;)

Seriously, there is no central organized private effort for awareness. Get some big sponsors so that you can buy TV spots when a 'cane is coming.

Get someone to run around the Home Depots and "hot brand" all the wood with the current Hurricane name and the organization.

Maybe sell some Hurricane Tape. :D
