painted wheels " holding up "
ok my fellow HOAB's i have been asked from a few of you how the wheels are doing . it has been over three months now , I have had them in moab and big bear , thats where they got scratched mostly from the boulder fields in big bear :D and one from falling off the wall on hells gate
i will post some pix of how they looked before i scratched them and then pix of damage :D |

last one drivers front least amount of damage small scuff on lip
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
So except for the abuse to the wheels, the paint seems to be holding up well. Thanks
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
i actually like the scrapes and the scratches on my rocker bars too :D
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Are you planning to touch them up...or just leave 'em as your "true wheeler evidence"?
|

yea dave , they are doin fine , i do not go to car washes . they may mess them up some with the brushes . just wash by hand , i think i will be able to go a whole year then will touch them up :D probably will scuff and repaint whole wheel then  just glad we dont get the big chips taken out like powder coat can chip less than 2 weeks till pismo :D havent had them in sand yet |

hey Hi , i think i will touch them up once a year  i dont want to look too ghetto :D probably paint htem before moab every year |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
So much for the bling free wheels:D :D
Actully looks good with some wear. Honestly, what good is it to beef up a truck and then take it to the mall. Them lockers aren't for speed bumps!:D Besides no one can talk crap since you have the 35's. |

Bling is like cancer an Hummers, you think its gone, but it seems to just resurface. I wish they would just offer the wheels black from the factory. |

Damn, have a little trouble getting that wheel balanced  Did all those weights lower your MPG ;) Looks great, may have to do that with the extra set I have :) |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
there are even more on the inside of wheels  , its not the tires that lower the mileage its the weights ;) :D
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Neo -
Thanks for the pics. Overall it looks like they're holding up great (You can't blame paint for loosing in the fight of paint vs. rock ) Yep! I can see it happening really soon! :D |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Neocon,
How do you like those Toyo's? They seem like an great fit for the H3. How's the road noise on them? |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Quote:
thanks for asking man , the toyos are very quiet , maybe half again as loud as stock 33's maybe less , i was very impressed . the guys here that are running them on their H2's told me that i wouldant even know i had them , they are right . :D compared to other mud terrains the Toyo's are pretty much silent  |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Are there any here with a white H3 who painted their rims white? I'm thinking of doing that but would like to see it on someone elses first.
|

Hey Ben , Hmrlvr has white and painted the wheels black , he left the lip polished for a really custom look :D :D Ipe is getting ready to do his  |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Thanks NEO. That was what I wanted to do if I was to get the black H3. Sort of a Black Ops look.:D But I'm dying to see if all my rims color matched to the body would look cool. But it being white will it look too overboard?
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
i think it will look sweet  not too overboard . if still not sure wait till Ipe gets his done and check it out . heck if your good at photo chopin just chop my wheels on to your truck to get an idea . i had TGL do a roof rack photo chop so i could see how that would look :D
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
G'head H3ben, ask TGL to do a photochop for you....;)

I saw your pics here from MOAB. Wow... nice. I am actually a road racer on asphalt tracks mostly- so when I saw that big hill climbing pictures with the H3s on it - I am now looking at my H3 going, can this baby really do that??? One other question - it seems from my research all the H3s come with 16x7.5 rims. So putting 33 inch 315x75R16 worked out well it seems? Other then maybe a calibration issue with the speedo - no problems say with the traction control on my automatic? |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Quote:
i have an automatic also , the speedo is off by 2 mph at 70 mph checked by a couple guys here with GPS units . most tire manufacturers will recomend a 8 inch rim . Do not worry about the 7.5 width we have about a dozen or more of us running the 35's on stock wheels now. nobody has busted a bead yet :D and from our pix you can see we have tested them pretty well  you will go thru brakes a little faster , but not much and them pads are cheap . for what we get in offroad traction and clearance it is well worth it  hope this helps with your decision , Neo |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
I have no idea how I missed this thread till now...
hmrlvr - They look great. Very nice job. Did you have any issues masking off the paint areas? |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Did you clearcoat the wheels at all? I wonder if that would make any difference off road.
I painted some steel wheels once with rustoleum metallic silver and once I clearcoated them, they looked awesome. The rust never came back and they held up for over five years so far (but never went offroad). |

Re: painted wheels " holding up "
I wonder if anodizing or powder coating a wheel would work, and how robust it would be?
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
P.S. I really like the look of the black rims on your truck NEOCON1 :)
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Quote:
thanks bear , i think powder coating or anadizing would hold up a little better but much harder to touch up . i planned on beating them against rocks so picked this method for ease in fixing after tearing them up . anodizing may cost alot they would have to strip them down to raw aluminum . some here are getting powder coating for 60 to 100 bucks per wheel . |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Paint sounds like a great idea. :D
|
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Topic back from the dead:
What kind of paint did you use? i cleaned my spare and primed it, then sprayed it with some paint from eastwood that is MADE for wheels. I can literally scatch it off with my fingernail. :lame: |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
its industrial spray enamel , i got it from imperial supplies thru my old work . i scuffed the wheels really well with a scotch brite pad before spraying .
heres a link http://www.imperialinc.com/items.asp?item=0850010 |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Quote:
I scuffed mine, as did Neo, but I sprayed them with the bedliner stuff, Held up great. |
Re: painted wheels " holding up "
Quote:
Dang, did you use the Duplicolor bedliner? i used that on my grill and i find that stuff to be pretty brittle. I scuffed up my grill REALLY well, and a few rock chips later, i'll have to do it again. it seems like a rock hits it and breaks of a big chunk. come to think of it, i've NEVER had good luck with paint. maybe i'll try that Fusion paint for the grill. |
