Protecting Your Home:

Protecting Your Home:
Locks, Lights and Good Neighbors
One of the crimes most frequently reported to the police is residential burglary. It's also the most preventable. It doesn't take much or cost much to out-smart most burglars. They're usually not professionals, but rather people taking advantage of an easy target. Burglars may do more than steal things. If they're surprised by someone coming home or if they choose a home that's occupied, someone may get hurt.

Tips on Safeguarding Your Home
  • Make sure all exterior doors have good locks-at least dead-bolt locks with a 1" throw.
  • Always lock up when you go out, even if only for a few minutes.
  • Secure sliding glass doors with bars or locks,or put a broom handle in the door track.
  • Make sure your windows have good locks, especially those at ground level.
  • Make sure all porches, entrances, and outside areas are well lit.
  • Trim any bushes or trees that hide doors or windows.
  • Maintain your yard and keep ladders and tools inside when you're not using them.
  • Don't hide your keys under the doormat or in a flowerpot. That's the first place burglars look! It's much better to give an extra key to a trusted neighbor.
  • Mark your valuable property like TVs, VCRs, computers, cameras and stereos with your driver's license number.
  • Keep a record of your property in a safe place.
  • Install an alarm system for summoning emergency help.
  • If you park your car outside, never leave a garage door opener in the car.

When you go away
  • Ask a neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers, and offer to return the favor.
  • Put an automatic timer on at least two lights and a radio. Consider photoelectric sensors to turn outside lights on and off automatically.
  • Tell a trusted neighbor when you're leaving and when you'll return. Include an itinerary and phone numbers where you can be reached in an emergency.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors
There's more to crime prevention than locks and lighting. The fact is, concerned neighbors who watch out for each other are the front-line defenses against crime.
  • Get to know your neighbors and discuss your concerns about the neighborhood.
  • Be alert to things that invite crime like poor street lighting, boarded-up buildings, a lack of recreational activities or jobs for teens, vacant lots littered with debris and inadequate day-care and after-school programs. Work with law enforcement, civic groups, schools, churches and service clubs to solve the problems.
  • Alert law enforcement to suspicious activities and any crimes.
  • Report nonworking street lights, abandoned houses and other problems.
  • Join a Neighborhood Watch group. If there's no Watch organization in your neighborhood, start one with help from local law enforcement and community groups.

Have you looked around or payed attention to how easy you could set up a perimeter security system for your house:confused:

it's ridiculously expensive to pay $5,000.00 for that set-up for your house......

But hey.......I drive a Jeep

Re: Protecting Your Home:

and seriously........"protecting the family".........

give me a ****ing break......all a camera is going to do is CATCH THE PERSON IN THE ACT......or SHOW YOU WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE ACT.......

GUN, BIG MEAN ASS DOG, GUN, and common sense.....

other then that, if someone wants to be a menace to society it is really out of your hands.......Criminals are not smart and a home security monitoring system isn't going to stop them from doing what they plan on doing...IMHO........

GUN, BIG MEAN ASS DOGZZZZ, GUN, GUN, Common Sense..........

I would hope that someone would be smart enough to be recording to a "smaller" backup PC tucked away nicely......

No need to send the images to your main home PC. All you need is a networked HDD somewhere in the house..... ........You gonna take the time to search for that?.......only if I dont have a big ass dog eh?:)

Re: Protecting Your Home:

Wrong. If you catch the criminal on a camera, and have video that you can actually make out (as opposed to the kiddie webcams you listed) the police will have a better chance getting that person off the street, which helps you and your family sleep better at night.

Also, with motion detection you can be alerted to a possible threat, view it, then take the proper actions before someone gains entry into your house. And then come the guns!

Motion detectors are cheap as hell also:rolleyes:

and what good is having someone on film "harming" your family:confused: Has the damage not been done?

Yes you would have a chance of getting the criminal off the streets, and maybe some "closure" but the one's you care for have already been harmed......

they are good for catching someone stealing tools, or busting into your Tahoe, etc.etc.etc.......not to protect your family.....?

Mine was a little less---posted link to show the system (but close)

Ridiculous? Or Is it just, NOT FAIR!

I would guess, Not Fair!

Definitely not for a Thief!

To protect Residents/business, (catch the fkr that's raiding mail boxes on the street for example.)

Not Fair! That my research, and thoughts on the system has caused the installation of others just like it!....And another Thief hits the street! Both were companies, and a couple friends have called for Home inslall dates!

I Spend as much on a security system, that costs as much as MY Laptop!--one of um! and ridiculed for wanting to protect my property at ALL Times! scratching head! lol

Or, That I can spend my bucks the way I want to!

Not Fair, That I get in instant e-mail, phone call, and some other neat little programmed features, 24/7/365, (can view realtime from ANYwhere), or......., As soon as THEY'VE ENTERED MY DOMAIN!!!! That I'll be able to burn and sent a copy (if needed), Then!...My Friend!...The HUNT!..........."WILL" Begin!!!! ;-)

It's also ridiculous to spend $1700.00 on a plywood box, but I did, And use it! (good box, I WANTED IT, so I BOUGHT It) But, you never commented on that! --Not that I give a chit! lol

But Damn!--We Just can't Win! scrutinized for our toys, our wheels by the sheet metal that surrounds them, And have the Audacity! to condem us for spending money! (Keeping people employed, manufacturing, customizing, servicing, and about anything else that can be thought up and associated with the SPENDING OF THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR!), BUYING AMERICAN!, BEING AMERICAN!, Hell! Just Can't Win!

Not directed @ you Moon, But like a lot of others, I just get a little tired of all the whining, and others thinking they have Some Sort Of RIGHT!, to tell me What, Where, When, Who, and Why, I need to Do WHATEVER I WANT!

For some, A string and a can will work just fine!, Others that Have A Little More, Want A Little More, And Get something better, Yet others just get the Absolute FKN BEST THEY CAN!--we're not in that class!....Yet!.........Well?....;-)

I Can Only Protect A Defend Myself--NEVER Leave It To SomeOne Else!

And Since We travel a fair amount, I like to keep an EYE ON THINGS!

I'm glad you posted that, I really needed to know how the 'hood is before we get there. So we really need to "pack". CO is there anything else we need to know ? PM me if we need to keep it on the QT. :D

I think CO has this 'hood confused with our old one. CO, we've moved from Niger and are back in Virginia Beach.

Steel bars on all windows and doors, 25 ft retaining wall with 3 strands of razor wire, cameras, and motion detectors. Once you get passed that the fireworks start.

Re: Protecting Your Home:

Perimeter Motion detection is all you need in my opinion - the most valuable thing in your home is you and your family. Robberies that take place while we are not in the house do not concern me - and trust me - good quality video footage is pretty much worthless - we have submitted hours of video to the police from our retail location plainly identifying the culprits - the only prosecution we ever got out of it was because we knew the person that the video showed stealing from us.

Dont protect your valuables - protect yorselves.
