Electric Trailer Brakes ???
 

I am hooking up electric brakes for the trailer and have the manual activator connected in the cab and when applied it applies the trailer brakes. BUT I have no trailer brakes when using the brake pedel. I looked at the fuse box under the hood and there is a fuse in the spot for electronic brakes I think it was labeled (rdl ) in the manual.

What am I missing ??

Is your electric brake controller , pendulum type or brake light type (inertia)? It sounds like it is the brake light type that will come on when you hit the brakes but need to know which one it is first . doug

It is brake light activated and has a squeeze type slide to operate manually

My wifes gone now with the hummer , so i cant go look yet. But do you have two wires going to the pos & neg of battery? Then one to a hot wire on the end of the brake switch. I think in the fuse box under the hood there is a blue wire that is just sitting there that needs to be plugged in to make the connection to the back of the truck. Does any of this sound familiar? doug

If he has braking upon moving the slider, then the wire under the hood should be hooked up.


BLKH2, do you have any kind of indicator LEDs or lights on the controller?

If so, do they activate when you mash the brake pedal?

Paragon- yup your right he is hooked up ,, ,, i had a brain fade.

He must not be hooked to the hot side of the brake light switch. In one way or another.

Yeah, I ended up custom wiring all of my stuff so I have no idea of how "it's supposed to be."

But it does sound as though the controller is not getting any signal from the vehicle brakes.

I think I got it figured out!
I found info that says a vehicle without the TP2 auxillary battery needs a
40 A fuse in the ( stud#1 ) location in the under hood fuse box.
( note: this fuse is not needed if you have 2 batteries )

I will check on trailer today and let you know.

Craig,

I hope it's that simple. But I'm not sure that it is. That would be the power supply to the brakes. If you are getting braking upon moving the slider, then you have power. Stud 1 doesn't have anything to do with receiving voltage from the vehicle's brakes.

I think someone else just last week or so had a similar problem but they were not getting any response back out to the brakes and it was because there was no fuse at stud 1.

Right you are. There is NO difference with the fuse added.
The controller has a light that lights when I use manually but does not light
when I push on brake pedel???

Just thought I'd mention tha tthe Trailering Brake Harness that Hummer sells will not work on '06 and later models unless you change the wiring on them. Don't know if they started making these for the later models yet. I showed the problem to my dealer and they were unaware of the issue.

Then it is the feed from the vehicle's brakes that is missing.

Wow, just stupid. They had the same problem with our '03s, which is part of the reason why mine is wired up differently.

You need to figure out which wire coming out of the Brake controller is the wire for the Brake feed. That wire needs to match with, IIRC, a light blue wire.

OK here we go !

Regrouped and have a new controller plug pig tail ( OEM ) to replace my current pig tail ( OEM ) NOW GET THIS

OLD PLUG WIRES : Lg blue
Lg black
Med red
Med white

NEW PLUG WIRES: Lg blue
Lg red
Sm brown
Sm black
Sm light blue



CONTROLLER WIRES : Lg black
Lg blue
Lg red
Lg white


Has anybody been here before ??????

(controller) the black is positive and the white is negative. The blue on my 03 is hooked to one of the blues under the hood . I just noticed that i have two blue wires dead headed up to the fuse box under the hood. I hooked my blue controller wire to one of my blue wires under the hood and i have trailer brakes. I can take a pic if that helps you. Its prolly all different on a 06.
The moral to the story. I think your blue wire has to be hooked to the blue wire in your harness and you will have brakes. when pedal is applied.

I'm thinking differently.

The large blue is the feed from the controller to the trailer brakes.

The red is likely the feed from the vehicle brakes TO the controller. So, I am guessing (on your old plug) the Med red should follow out to a light blue wire that is part of the truck's wiring harness.

BTW, where are plugging this pigtail into?

Is the pigtail plugging up directly to the controller or you having to wire it to the controller? Are you have to wire it to the truck or are you plugging it in the box behind the brake pedal?

I am plugging into the interior box behind brake pedal, The plug has bare ends that I am connecting to bare ends on the controller using wire crimp connectors.

Do you have a voltmeter?

I'm guessing you need to figure out which pin is the brake feed from the truck and wire it to the red wire on the controller.

Plug in the new pigtail and figure it out by trial and error. Sorry can't be much more help.

Best I can do is to tell you what color wire goes to each pin. I ended up taking the Hummer harness a part and used a voltmeter. My H2 is outside work, so let me know if you want me to get the pin-outs for you and I will get back to you.

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!

Switched to the newer plug with 5 wires going to a Drawtite Activator with 4 wires.
From plug to controller - Blue to Blue , Red to Black , Black to White , Light Blue & Brown to Red. and all is well:excited:
