16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
I finally got my HMMWV 37 x 12.50 R16.5 tires and wheels put on my H2. Tires are Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Dura wall tires w/ puncture resistant sidewalls. Wheels are 24 bolt H1 military wheels w/ new style run flats installed.
These beasts weighed 172lbs per wheel. I also have a 5th one that I am going to mount on my rear swing arm tire carrier once I get it put on. I had 37 x 13.5 R18 Mickey Thompson on here for a few years. These new tires ride much smoother & turn easier. [IMG] ![]() [IMG] ![]() |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
It's so bad ass, but I am so divided right now.
I want, but man, 172lbs, the advantage you gain from having $400 set of almost new 37s you lose in the amount of money you spend on replacing front end parts. I'mma thinkin maybe I'll get both these, and some new stockers |

Thanks man! I get a lot of looks in it.Live for the NOW... go for it! I unfortunately don't have my stock rims from the PO. My 37 x 13.50 R18s weren't too much lighter than what I have now and haven't had any front end issues in the few years I've owned it. But, I would like to upgrade to heavy duty tie rod ends (Cognito mabye?). I say go for it as I see the 100% new quantities dwindling rapidly. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
They look great, but I don't think I could lift the spare onto the swingarm. :o
I should weight one of my stock rims+35's to see how much of a difference it really is. |

I'm curious as to the weight also. If putting onto a rear carrier, you'll definitely need an extra set of hands. My last 37" spare WAS on the cargo rack. Notice there is NO spare on there now. That would probably cave my roof in! :giggling: |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Is there anything else needed to fit these besides a mild lift? Any kind of spacer or adapter needed?
|

My front end was lifted from the previous owner via torsion bars (maybe an 1" - 1.5" or so). Also, if using the HMMWV wheels, you will need a solid 2" Billet aluminum spacer (mybilletadapters.com) -Richard is who I used and got them to me pretty quick. High quality! |

Are these the ones? http://billetwheeladapters.com/wheel...5-2-thick.html Is the spacer just so the wheel will clear the brakes and not rub on the suspension/frame? |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed

That be them! I paid $200 including shipping from the other guy I mentioned. The adapters are to correct the offset. The HMMWV are high offset hubs & the H2 is a low offset. The 2" corrects the backspacing to allow clearance for the calipers and to make the wheels sit flush with the body (not tucked inside fenderwells). Are you going to get a set?? :beerchug: |

I'm seriously thinking about it. I was going to do the Cognito UCA's & torsion bars to try and fit 37's anyway. This solution is cheaper and I think it looks better than aftermarket wheels or painted stockers. No need for beadlocks, correct? Did you have to get the wheels balanced? |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
These came mounted & balanced w/ runflats already installed in them. The bead locks are part of the 2 piece wheel. I haven't tried taking them off yet due to I'm afraid of losing air, plus I've only had these on a week now & been snowing or raining since then.
I'm actually at a tire shop as we speak having them check out the balance on one of my rear tires. Slight vibrations above 60mph. My plans are to paint the wheels with Line-X to match my roof rack, ladder & front bumper. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
I saw them online, they are absolutely awesome. How much did you pay for the new set with tires shipped?
Also I'm worried about the o-ring they mention going bad. I'm assuming its between both halves of the rim to hold the air?? |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed

I paid $975 for 5 wheels & tires all 100% new. Already mounted & balanced w/ run flats installed. Freight shipping from WI to St. Louis was $120 on 1 pallet (dock delivery). I've only had these on for a week now so I haven't had a chance to find out more about them. I know the old style 8 & 12 bolt wheels had o-ring issues but haven't heard anything about the 24 bolt. I recommend them! |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Do you have a link to where you bought them from?
I did some research earlier today and it looked like the o-ring problem was from tire shops incorrectly mounting tires, so it may be something to watch out for when you get to your next set. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
I did read the 24 bolt offset wheels didn't have as many issues with the o-rings.
Hmm interesting indeed. $1k for wheels (awesome ones at that) is not bad at all. I think my BFG's are the stockers because they're starting to get cracked everywhere on the tread so it may be time for new ones soon. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
The company is Feltz Auto & Tire. They have a regular tire shop, but also a huge supply of these HMMWV wheels & tires. They said they have a contract with the Gov't regarding purchasing surplus.
They don't have a website but do list stuff occasionally on Ebay. It's a rather small shop. Dustin is the guy I used. His cell # is (715) 305-3853 and they also accept Paypal. After I paid, my shipment was ready the next day to ship out. He even sent me pics of the wheels on the pallet per my request. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Here's my thinking, I've been looking around and can't find much in regards to other tires in the same size. That being said it seems the only decently priced tire for these rims would be the military surplus stuff. However what happens when these start to dwindle??
Any thoughts on finding tires in the long term? |

There's always Ebay. Or if you hate money, tirerack.com has them for $675 per tire for the same thing. I have a feeling there will always be someone selling these Goodyear MT/R tires in atleast a 95% or better tread for quite some time. |

Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
I talked to Dustin @ Feltz tire and mentioned to him the interest in his HMMWV 24 bolt wheels on this site. He said to mention me (Michael) & the Hummer forum and he said he will try to hook you up however he can.

I've been working with him through Ebay. Look like shipping to my house is going to be $320 so a little over $1k for a set of 4.....can't decide whether I want a 5th for the spare or not..... |

That's crazy for shipping. If you have a dock you can ship to it'll save you atleast $100 I bet. Like ship to a local FedEx or ups hub station. I paid $120 for dock to dock shipping to STL. It would've been $280 to ship to my house. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
I live very far away from Phoenix which is where the Fedex/UPS etc hubs are all located. It's easier to just pay $100 more and have the damn things dropped off right at my door honestly. Still waiting to hear back from him to confirm the total after mentioning the forums so maybe it will come down a few bucks.....hopefully...

Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
I hope he can help you out. I know he is getting low on 100% treads. Although his 95% & up treads still measure at 19/32" (new is also 19/32").
Let me know how it goes because I need to place another small order w/ him. Also, let me know the name he knows you by so I can mention it when I call him. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
My name is Blaine but I've been speaking with him through the wifes Ebay account. I think I'll actually call him this week and speak to him directly instead of through ebay messaging.
|
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Good idea. He was slow w/ me on Ebay messaging so I just called him.
I told him what I wanted, 10 min later he sent me a Paypal invoice, and by the end of the day, my 5 wheels were shrink wrapped on a pallet ready to go. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
yeah I'll definitely call him tomorrow. My front tires are still pretty good but I think I'm just going to pick a set up and keep them in the garage for the time being.

Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Quick question(s) on driveability. Have you noticed any lack of excelleration? Vibrations? How about top speed? The tires are rated for 80mph (or their about).
I'm looking at the same mod, and I'm not a speed demon in the H2, but I will be towing. Thanks! |

Acceleration is near the same, slightly less, but I was running 37 x 13.50 R18s previously. These were an 1" wider than what I have now. And I do mean slightly less. My wife can't tell a difference but this is my daily driver. It is definitely a much smoother ride than my previous tires / rims. Vibrations: I had to take my 2 rear wheels to get balanced at a local Off-Road shop (Walmart or Jiffy Lube can't balance a 37" tire). My L Rear took 18oz & my R Rear took 16 oz. I rarely go over 65, but this morning I looked at the speedo & I was doing 72. It was still smoooooth! I did read that with the Hutchinson VFI Runflats, they spec them as Anti-Mine. Make sure the wheels you get are 'E' Load rated and with the VFI runflats. The older versions do vibrate quite a bit and are near impossible to get balanced. Good luck & keep me posted! |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Just wondering how these are holding up long term? Just picked up 5ea, 24 bolt wheels, and now looking for tires.
|

Sorry for the delay. They are holding up great. Lots of looks from everyone, plus keepin lg my spare on the back, they look Massive! I had my wheels sprayed in Line-X and custom steel center plates made. Ill have to post some pics on here soon. But I do HIGHLY recommend having them balanced. At 172lbs each, it will shake the hell out of you. Did you buy them from the guy I listed on here? I thought all his wheels were already mounted with tires? |

I love it!!!!!!! looks totally awesome! |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Hey guys,
Saw this thread and remembered seeing these rims recently on CL. They are asking $550 for 5. If anyone is still looking for them couldn't hurt to take a look. http://worcester.craigslist.org/pts/4008012908.html |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
It's not the rims that will cost the money its the tires. Surplus right now are cheap but look at the brand name tires...you'll be blown away at the price of the rubber. That's what turned me off of the idea.
They look hands down awesome but I'd rather stick with a standard 17" wheel and pay less for rubber down the road. |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Can't you get the 16.5s milled down to 16? I thought there was a thread about that...
|
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Quote:
I thought someone said they could be rolled down or however they do it to 16's but pretty sure no one has attempted it. Someone aftermarket should just come out with wheels that look the exact same but one piece in different sizes-I'm sure they'd sell pretty good! |
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
The 24.5" Alcoa's on my diesel had to get milled down to 24" to accommodate a street tire. It is doable. I am not sure the difficulty or if shops will attempt them.
|
Re: 16.5" H1 HMMWV wheels installed
Yeah I've heard of some shops who won't even balance them due to them being 2 piece O-ring and mine proof run flats. Probably have to find a good machine shop willing to take then on and even at that I would be weary of the rims after.
