We usually hear about all of the compliments you H2'ers get when out driving. The "hey, nice truck!" and the "wow"s. Have any of you received negative comments from people?

When telling people that I put my deposit on the SUT I've got:

"personally I think its a bit much, but it should go OK in the snow..."

"a little pretentious don't you think?"

"it's what, 55 grand? Buy a BMW"

"I'd get a Tahoe"

I even got:

"thats a long wait... I'm selling my 2000 Malibu you know"

Of course I get the hi-fives and "that's awesome" from most people. I'm totally comfortable in my decision, I love the SUT, but some people have no class...

Anything from "Good for you that you can afford it." to "penile dysfunction!"

No negative comments whatsoever. I'm sure there are plenty of folks that think the H2 is ugly, but they haven't said it to my face.

Get a BMW? Baaaaaaaaa Baaaaa! I expect such a comment from the mass of SHEEPLE this nation is now raising. My parents have an X5 and I have no admiration for those German Hondas with wood grain.

Buying an H2 was a little outta character for me. So even my "friends" asked about my "mid-life crisis" or said something like "why in the world did you get that?"

Fortunately, I have some friends who were genuinely happy for me. Those are the ones I still see. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]

Usually get the gawkers the thumbs up and even waved to. The other day some guy in a Ford Ranger flipped me off. But verbally I have received no complaints. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

That [the middle finger] is always the surest sign of jealousy or a driver that feels threatened (assuming you didn't cut him off). The guy in the Ford was seriously jealous; how else can you explain his effort to single you out of the crowd and make such a gesture.

There are 280 million people in America, so there are bound to be a fair number of idiots.

The Hummer is about as close to an All-American vehicle that you can get [the throttle sensor is from Hitachi - sob]. Don't these Ford and Chevy guys realize that we are allies? If anything, go pick on the Nissans, we need to stick together.

The most negative comment I've gotten is "what's the gas mileage like?" Even that's not really negative. I've gotten thumbs up and lots of positive comments.

I was driving in town when a 15 year old kid yelled out "get a real Hummer" He was just expecting me to keep on going, but instead I turned around and pulled over. I rolled down my window and asked him what he had said, he then said "Nice truck" I said thank you and went on my way. Just to see his face made it all worth while.

I've been stopped probably a hundred times in the five months I've had mine and had two negative comments.

One woman hollered out her car window: "That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen." I yelled back: "Look in your mirror, then"

The second was a teenager at the Half Moon Bay Halloween parade (where I was with three H1s) who said: "too bad you didn't buy a real Hummer." I sweetly replied: "Yeah, what does daddy let YOU drive, junior??" His friends howled with laughter at him.

I have people of all ages/genders/walks of life stop me and ask about my truck. They're genuinely curious, and most really love it.

We did get one guy, going to the Islanders game last night, give us the finger. No one else has had the guts to say anything to our face.

No negatives, just friendly poking fun at me which they'd regardless.. I was even asked for a ride by someone who drives a hybrid.

If someone was going to spend $55K on a BMW...I'd say....but you could have a REAL offroad-capable SUV for the same money PLUS it's American.

What the heck does the BMW, Range Rover, Lexus or any of these pretencious wannabe SUV's have over the Hummer. You can't even compare these vehicles to what we have! I mean....DAMN!

I've had a few negative comments, one gal told me the H2 was "fu#@%ing ugly". I calmly replied "Momma always said, if you don't have something nice to say, best you just keep your comments to yourself". She replied with a real nasty look.....to which I added "Momma also said to go fu%@& youself bitch!!" and walked off.

I know, I know....but I am a contractor and it's not like I'm writing cards for Hallmark. That gal was WAY out of line just blasting me with that comment.

Mostly I've gotten nothing but ooohs and ahhhs. I did have one friend tell another friend that he thought it was "ostentatious", but he was too cowardly to say it to my face, apparently. I do have lots of people ask me about insurance rates and gas mileage, and a couple of people have asked me about cost. I also had one lady in a minivan make a disgusted face at me and shake her head and wag her finger. Don't know what that was all about. I was just sitting at a traffic light.

Funny, I was in the grocery store in the check out line and I looked out in the parking lot and saw some people had their faces pressed up to the windows of my baby, so I pushed the unlock button (that thing works from wayyyy far away). The lights flashed and they jumped back and started looking guiltily around. It was funny. I should have set off the alarm.

I dont own one, but I have to say I really love the H2! I saw an add for the H2 a few weeks back I thought, wow, that must cost at least 100,000. I was very surprised to see the base price! About a week later I was up in Duluth MN, I was out eating at a red lobster with my wife, We came out and there it was:) Seeing it up close, I just about craped my pants. After that I was hooked! I kept seeing the thing all weekend, the owner was staying at the same hotel, and parked it right in front of our window. Of course I couldn't keep my eyes off it, I mean, the damn H2 was taunting me....it was cool. Anyway, this board is great, and when I get my H2 (long time from now) I will be sure to join in all the fun with everybody!

I've spent almost 4 months of 6 months of waiting trying to talk myself out of it, so I've talked to a lot of people about Hummers, etc. I've also driven quite a few, and you know, I never did get any negative reactions [unless you consider jaws dropping a negative reaction.]

In talking about what I should do, I did get a lot of environmentalists I know who were just horrified that I [who has had Suburbans and Tahoes since 95, go figure] could think of driving such a beast. The main reason: 'you don't NEED it.' But after I explained my uses, most had to admit, it made sense.

Once you get past the liberal agenda, though, everybody asks for a ride as soon as I get it! [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif[/img] ALMOST everyone loves the whole concept once they think you're not yuppie scum.

My truck seems to mostly bring big wide smiles. The only negative comment was when my daugter & I had driven up to the top of Whiteface Mountain, made the turn around to park. A guy got out of his car and we could hear him say to his buddy "Whats a drug dealer doing up here?"

The funniest thing is, the person we figured to be the most enviro-freako person in our co-op looooooved the H2. She shops at whole foods and eats soy whip. I ran into her yesterday for the first time since we got ours and was expecting to get lambasted, but instead, she said, "Your new truck is reeeaallly cooool." And went on and on for a long time about the H2. Talk about throwing me for a loop. Even in NYC, we haven't gotten anything but positives, except for the loser in the Maxima on Long Island that gave us the finger.

It looks cool. It looks expensive. Actually it looks like an armored car...but anyway, I am not sure if people fear it or want it.

There is a huge ripple affect happening in America regarding their piggy SUV "kid carriers". And I must be frankly honest, I have seen a ton of people that look so out of place driving their H2's it makes me wonder what compelled them to buy it. They are the "I have to have one to show all my friends with Esclades, Tahoes and Denalis I have something different". Unfortunately this is what brings on some of the vehicle's negative image. The truck belongs off road. People expect to see it 4-wheeling, towing dirt bikes or boat, camping, running the Rubicon trails---not with guys in ties heading to their desk jobs, ladies with their kids hanging out the windows when they do school drop off and pickup and certainly not for stuffing it in those darn little parking spaces at the mall......

I'm an off road purist. Know what you are buying and what it's for. It's not for shopping.

Long ago, on another list, this same issue came up. Some lady actually asked me "wouldn't the penile enlargment have been a cheaper route?" when inquiring about my choice to buy the H2.

By list consensus the best comeback was to boldly state "why would I do that? My wife already complains it's too big as it is!". This was all funny and good.

For what it's worth, my license plate frame was originally going to read "Why yes, I am compensating for other inadequacies"...but due to length and readability it was cut down to read "Makin' up for other shortcomings".

And now for our adult rating...I would be willing to pay good money to any of the wild & crazy ladies on our list to do this: The next time anyone asks "why an H2?" (with a snotty nasty attitude)....just reply back: cause I like a rough mean ride, it was either this or a (sorry...I just can't type it)

I think it's wrong that people try to psychologically analyse us. Why can't we enjoy a great offroad vehicle without all the criticism?

were from people who were supposed to be close friends who stated the day we got it,"that thing is ugly, I would never want to own one." Came from two couples we know, neither of which have the means to own anything other then a rice burner. So, at first we were insulted and then after a day or so, put it all in perspective. The reality is that most people we talk to want to know how much it cost and then are shocked to know that the Caddy Escalade and many of the "loaded" high end SUV's are comparable in price or more expensive. Same for many of the High dollar cars like the Mercedes and the BMW SUV's. Similar issues with gas milage, but of course we have beat that issue to death, there are plenty of trucks that use as much or more gas then the H2. Once you address these two issues then suddenly it is more cool...

You're worthy in my opinion. I don't care what ANYONE uses this truck for. I'm sick to death of people analyzing my choice, what I look like, and whether I "deserve" to drive it. You are 200% percent correct. It's my own business and no one else. I have gotten nothing, but how's the gas mileage from everyone and wow what a truck. I have actually three times, as I am walking back to my H2, seen people posing and taking a picture in front of my truck. People that I had no clue who they were. When I asked them why they did it, they said they were just excited to be able to see one close up. On the other side, since it is legal in Texas, I am considering taking the course to begin legally carrying my .357 Magnum, just in case.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record but . . . you go girl!

I am sick and !*&^%$ tired of people telling me I'm an idiot for having this truck if I'm not driving it exclusively off-road. Besides the fact that it's none of anyone's business, this is NOT strictly an off-road vehicle. It was designed to travel well off-road and on-road. I will use all of its capabilities.

Then on the other side, I get harassed by my mother for taking my own truck off-road and getting it muddy. Can't please anyone so I'm not going to worry about it. I'm happy with my truck and with how I use it so get the heck out of my business.

Well it really wasn't an attack but it did make me very nervous about potential problems like the early reports in N. Virginia.

I went to the movie yesterday to see the second installment of Lord Of The Rings. When I came out there was a note posted on the bumper saying "I'm Changing the Climate (8mpg, $50,000 makes no sense)." Luckily nothing else was done. I hope this is a limited response and I don't have to look over my shoulder anytime I go into the city. They should get their facts straight before attacking. Cost and mileage not that different from any other SUV. Maybe a little higher cost but not materially different, maybe 15% higher than a tahoe with the same options. I am a little concerned that the H2 will become the easy target for all of those environmentalist that hate SUV's.

This did leave me a little disturbed last night. Most comments have been positive other than one kid making the ugly comment and of course the gas mileage. I have found most people very surprised at the cost. I think they are expecting much higher.

My wife got a kick out of waiting for the H2 at a hotel valet and listening to all of the comments. They didn't think it was for her. They were embarrassed initially but quickly crowded around for a look when offered. We have often offered the gawkers a look inside and nearly get run over each time.

People amaze me though. While I don't feel asking gas mileage is too obtrusive the other questions blow me away. We also own a LR Def. 90. With both cars people always ask what we had to pay. It blows me away every time. That is right up there with asking about your income.

I guess no gain (owning an H2) no pain (annoying/rude people).

We have had no negative reaction from anyone.
Nowadays, Benz & BMW are everywhere like Toyota (There is story on this in current AutoWeek), but years ago, when they were more prestigious, I did get some negative reactions from some truckers, got keyed a few times, but no strangers ever asked me about the cars. Hummer turned out to be a people-friendly vehicle, strangers rich or poor would smile or talk to us about it. I don’t mind any of these brief questions, and we are always very open and friendly in response. I found strangers tend to be more careful and reserved with me next to Hummer than my wife, they tend to talk more or look closer with a female Hummer driver.

On the topic of whether the Hummer should be reserved for only the off-road enthusiasts, I say NO. Any one that likes the H2 and can afford one should purchase as they see fit. I pick-up groceries and go wheeling with my vehicle, but if another H2 owner only goes shopping with it - fine, that's their business.

I have admiration for all of you that bought American; yes, it still matters.

I've actually beat the heck out of my H2 in the 6 months I've owned it. The wheels have scratches and the entire vehicle has been submerged in mud, snow, and grime up to the door sills.

You make the payments - use it as you like.

I have learned alot about the H2 and to all the nay sayers, with things like transmission fluid that lasts the life of the vehicle and and extended lif coolent and all of the hydroforming procsss used to make the HUMMER it is a true environmentally frendly vehicle. I think as more pepople learn the truth about the HUMMER the more they want one.

H2Norcal, give me a break. I'm one of those "ladies" with kids, I take my H2 shopping (gasp!), and it also gets a lot more offroad time than probably 99% of anyone else driving one. Like the other women on this forum, I am sick to death of people who seem to think that you need to fit in a certain box to "deserve" an H2 or that if you're a female with kids you don't go offroading. You're as bad as the people who accuse men who drive H2s of having penile inferiority complexes. At any rate, I don't care if my H2 never left the freakin' pavement, what difference does it make to you who drives an H2, why they bought it, and what they use it for? Does it effect your enjoyment of your vehicle if you don't think everyone else's reasons for buying one are as worthy as yours? Dude, that's just sad. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif[/img]

Isn't it great that we live in this great country and have the choices we do.

I personally love the H2, whether its off-roading or headed over to Home Depot, or just plain cruising around. I find reasons everyday to drive mine somewhere...my wife always finds places we need to go and she wants to be sitting the Hummer when we go. I read the post, forget who it was that posted about getting hit at 60mph by a Jeep and the H2 save his familys life, HMMMMM can you put a price on family safty? I think that is the best reason to drive a tank and I can't wait untill I can afford one!

Well I guess I stirred the pot a bit. Steve R, I know how you feel now (side steps). You are all right. It doesn't matter what you drive or where you drive it. Just that you enjoy it. I hope our dialog on this topic only helps everyone of you deal with the pressures you may encounter. The H2 is a wild vehicle. We all wanted one for individual reasons. I will guarantee that your reason was centered around having the first of something very different and eye catching. Ego? Bored of the other SUVs? Probably both of my reasons. Enjoy it either way.

Shea. I'm a guy and have kids. My son is totally infatuated with it and my daughter thinks its ugly. Although I think you should get what you want in life, I still see no purpose for using it as mom's mini-van. Sorry. It just looks funky when I see mom and the kids hanging out the windows yelling at their friends. It looks more like a "look at me I got one" thing than "gee, I bought this for a functional reason and happen to be picking up my kids". To each their own.

My bad comments have come from friends only. Strangers are polite and always have nice things to say or ask.

Some of my supposed good friends, say things like:

"How do you like your Chev 1500 pickup (referring to the frame"

"For 50K I would expect" (something they feel should've been in or on the Hummer)

"I would buy a Tahoe and a car for that"

Things like this are what I hear and this is from some friends. Of course, my true friends treat me with respect and joke with me about everthing including the Hummer.

The rest I forget.

As for Steve's post.......I agree with him. When someone makes that kind of statement to me I simply say "NO ONE EVER ASKED ME FOR A REFUND?? as I start to unbutton my 501 jeans.....

I was at the red neck mall (wal-mart) the other day picking up a few things for our off road trip this weekend and was getting out of my H2. Before I actually got out I was putting papers (checks and deposits)and envelopes away out of sight. As I was doing this two young black men walked in front of my H2 and were making comments about it. I had the sunroof propped up and I could hear what they were saying.

Of course they were going on and on about it in their hip-hop talk. One came up to the grill and said "Bitch, what you need this for?" thinking that I could not hear him. I igonored him of course. He went on to say, "Bitch, you need to get out so I can see inside this ride cause I need it.". And then I looked up and he was a little shocked that I heard everything he said.

I rolled down the window as he was walking up to the my side of the H2 and asked "what did you say?", he replied..."Oh I was just looking at your ride."

I replied "Uh, that's not what you said and I you really don't need this in the hood do you?"...shocked that a short white girl would reply so boldly, he remarked that he thought it was too big for me to drive. I told him it was plenty big for the gun under my seat.

They quickly trotted on in the Walmart. Another black gentleman came up to me after I finally got out and commented with a great big smile on how much he really liked it. He said it was so bad!!!

So frankly I'm not thrilled about seeing H2 on MTV and becoming a "rappers/gangster" mobile. I got enough of that with my 7 series. I want the H2 to give presence of the rough and rugged American man and it's soil.

Can't believe I was so gutsy with this guy. Thank god their are cameras at wal-mart. I would have hated to gone Madeline TooGood on his ass in the parking lot. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif[/img]
