Re: Loser Hybrids!
WOW, I NEED A BUMPER STICKER THAT SAY'S
" MY HUMMER IS SAVING THE WORLD FROM YOU GREENIES" For instance, the dust-to-dust energy cost of the bunny-sized Honda Civic hybrid is $3.238 per mile. This is quite a bit more than the $1.949 per mile that the elephantine Hummer costs. The energy cots of SUVs such as the Tahoe, Escalade, and Navigator are similarly far less than the Civic hybrid. Spinella's finding that a Hummer on the whole consumes less energy than a hybrid than even some smaller hybrids and non-hybrids has infuriated environmentalists. And on its face it does seem implausible that a gas-guzzling monster like a Hummer that employs several times more raw material than a little Prius' could be so much less energy-intensive. But by and large the dust-to-dust energy costs in Spinella's study correlate with the fanciness of the car ? not its size or fuel economy -- with the Rolls Royces and Bentleys consuming gobs of energy and Mazda 3s, Saturns and Taurus consuming relatively minuscule amounts. |

Re: Loser Hybrids!
This article has just made my year. I'm up in Ithaca, NY where thinking green is religion of choice. Driving a lifted H2 in a town where Prius' and Volvo's rule the roads have gotten me more than a few unkind responses. I plan to print out a bunch of copies of this and hand them to every hippie who even glances in my direction. My buddie just showed the article to his wife who was against getting one and they are heading to the Hummer dealer 2nite (just to look of course)... ;) The revolution has begun... VIVA LA HUMMER....

Re: Loser Hybrids!
I can see a bumper sticker ideal coming out soon.:D
"My Hummer Loves Earth More Than Prius. Ask Me How." |

that's a bleeding-good idea. The CNW paper is something that got a brief bit of press, and then largely subdued. Nice to see it pop up in something recent. It does go to show that there is alot more to think about that EPA ratings, and it shouldn't surprise anybody that the hybrids do poorly when all is considered (you gotta ditch those batteries someday. someday libs will spaz over all the batteries and what to do with them. someday libs will be pro-nuke power after deriding it in the past, and someday people will just realize that the earth isn't going to global-warm into extinction, but anyway). But don't post this anywhere near a jeep forum, as the Wrangler is like the most energy efficient vehicle of all. |
Re: Loser Hybrids!
And remember, even if this study was scrutinized to its core, broken down into overall Co2 production, overall oil use, and everything else, and the results still stood:
a) it would never get widespread attention because the media is very liberal and b) enviro's would hate it, because along with liberalia and environuttia go a certain element of bias against american things. And if jeeps and tahoes were very efficient, this would not work for them, so they'd simply never accept it. much less if hummers were demonstrated to be efficient... they'd start giving hummers love precisely never, regardless of any evidence. |

Nice article. I hate the Prius even more, now.:) |
Re: Loser Hybrids!
this reminds me that i've long meant to write those guys (CNW) to get some more detail about their study. its perplexing how they can come up with figures of several dollars per mile, or 1/2 a million over the life of the vehicle...
