I mounted some PIAA 510s in the existing buckets for the DRLs....took me just an evening in the garage tinkering with them to get them just right.

I am a total fan of HID headlights (I am running the Delta Tech Industries', right now). But for fogs, I have a definite preference for an amber beam. Have you (or has anyone) ever run HID foglights in thick ground fog? If so, how did they work out for you?

I agree, completely (except the amber part, of course). Fog lights improve with wattage, reflector/lens size and proximity to the ground. I have some old PIAA series 70 (maybe 170?) large rectangular fog lamps that I loved on the Tahoe. In the winter, I often hit very dense groundfog on my way to the hill. I know the route like the back off my hand, but with precipitous drop-offs and other drivers' inexperience, It can be nerve racking without an ideal light setup. Right now, my fogs are on the grilleguard (TERRIBLE!). I am considering cutting rectangular hole where the DRL's are to install my old PIAA's. But I don't want to destroy the look of the truck.

But you are right, people mostly use the term fog light and DRL interchangeably. Sorry, just me being anal, again.

Tower, I am not entirely sure what you meant but wanted to make it clear that higher wattage and larger lens lights DO NOT make for better FOGS.

All lights diffuse the light output in some way and the stray lights is what causes the issue with visibility in fog. Higher wattage bulbs will increase the amount of stray light output and provide more glare to the driver. There is a nice balance to be achieved by bulb size and lens design/size.

Well designed fogs will have a flat cut-off at the top of the beam and that is the main design that makes them effective aside from mounting them as low as possible.

Also, Tower, some observation that may or may not be accurate.

You like the amber in the fog. Some feel the amber provides better visibility. I personally don't like amber and don't know about the effectiveness. BUT, I have HID headlights and replaced my DRLs with Cibie Tango fogs. Now, granted, my headlights are mounted much higher than the fogs, but the yellower looking halogen bulbs provide better close-in visibility in the fog than the HID does.

I have wanted/considered replacing the Tangos with HID but keep reminding myself that when it does get foggy I really like having the Tangos on there for visibility just in front of the truck. But their light "color" is of course a yellow where the HID is more white/blue.

Just a thought and not sure if it is just me or not.

Okay, yes, the fogs have a sharp top side cut-off and yes, the lens dispersal pattern is important. But those thing being held as constant, the significant parameters distingushing foglight efficacy are wattage, reflector/lens size and proximity to the ground. I know there is some personal preference regarding color. I am PARTIALLY red/green colorblind. I don't know what role this may play. But one thing that is scientifically measurable, is the greater reflection (blinding) off the whiter (bluer) colored lights. I am not trying to sway anyone's opinion,but anecdotally, for just this one person, amber is definitely preferable. My HID's obviate the need for driving lamps. But as great as they are in the darkness, they are at least that blinding in fog.

How bad do you all think large rectamgular fogs would detract from the look of the truck?

Don't do it. REPEAT!!! Do not do it. There are some really good round fogs available. In fact with the laser cut lens these days, round is even better because there is less surface area "bending" up.

My fogs have defined cutoff and are round.

Don't try to force a square (rectagular) peg into a round hole. Sorry..... so sorry, couldn't help myself.
