On my 15 mile trip home from work in San Antonio, I saw 5 H2 Hummer's. Now I could be wrong, but it seems like this truck is doing quite well in the sales area. I've seen a large number of them lurking around the city.

It just seems strange in this economy that people are finding ways to buy a $50k vehicle...at least to me. I blew my wad on a $42k Discovery before the H2 came out. But I'm having a tough time justifying such a huge loan in this economic slump (although I wish I could).

Or are all you folks just filthy rich!

I'll check back later, on my way to meet some folks off-road!

Who are you calling a filthy bitch? Oh, I'm sorry. Sometimes I am filthy, have never been rich (although really poor people think I am) and actually have tremendous debt.

It's the american way ya know.

I'm almost always dirty, and I don't mean soiled.

I saw a long (maybe 1 hour) program on E! this evening about Arnold and his lifestyle. There was a big segment about his HummerS. Very nice things said about the Hummers.

I read there was a big surge in car buying on Sept 30, because car registration in California went up 300% on Oct 1.

I don't know about this economy, I know it is bad, but my business is at record high, yet I can see and feel how bad it is, my salespeople are telling me that everyday. yet I see brand new $90K cars everywhere, saw a new Lamboghini today that was so beautiful, it was unbelievable. There is new house 1.2 miles from my home now under construction for 2 years, I was told still 2 years to go at a cost of $45 million. I see at least 30+ new homes construction or major remodeling in my town, many in $5-$10 million range. Not just here, same down in LA, Newport beach, San Diego areas. The good, the bad and the ugly all at the same time. Unemployment at record high, home sales at record high. AOL survey 2 days ago, majority says it is very bad and I think 62% said Bush can't fix it.

Steve R 10-03-2003 04:44 AM

can someone please translate that for me? I don't speak MACaroni...

DRTYFN 10-03-2003 05:51 AM

Mac,
Is the house you're talking about being built on Ralston?

Quote " I don't know about this economy, I know it is bad, but my business is at record high, yet I can see and feel how bad it is, my salespeople are telling me that everyday."

Wow,this is an interesting statement Mac, either you are pumped up on some serious cold medicine, whacked out on drugs or else a major commission structure has taken place in your company this year.

I've just been swamped with work for the past few months getting 2 New subdivisions underway. It appears I just missed out on a troll attack. Other then that, everything else much the same. I see DENNIS and DRTYFN still have the mastery of the R-rated version of our English language. Looks like lots of Newbies.
What happened to the women ?????????

Glad your all still here

For me personally, I'm currently downsizing as much as possible. I unloaded my Honda Accord (opted to keep the Disco because it wouldn't sell). I've put the full stop on all unnecessary expenses (dining out, modifying my Disco, etc.) Our family income hasn't changed really, but I just don't feel good about taking on any debt at this time.

I was seriously looking at selling both vehicles and picking up the H2 (but I couldn't sell the Disco), and even when I was serious about it, it seemed like this just wasn't the right time to take on a new loan (plus the H2 was brand new and I was a bit nervous!)

I guess the spirit of my original post is that people are willing to take on new debt for the H2 - despite the economy - most likely because IMO, the H2 is the perfect opportunity for the little guy to pick up a great vehicle at an affordable price. When you compare SUV's, there's no arguing that the H2 isn't priced competitively (for what it's capable of)

Then again, I don't think there are that many H2 owners going offroad overall.

Is Hummer the most expensive American made regular production vehicle? I think it is. If you compare it with other SUVs or cars, the $50K-$55K price is about midrange, absolutely not in the top price tier. I see more new RR, G500, X5, Lexus SUVs everywhere, all far more expensive than Hummer. IMHO, Hummer is exceptional value.

Drtyfn, yes, precisely, that house with the great wall near Ralston and Chattau. I see 40-50 Amigos working on the big stonewall everyday for over a year, just the wall. I was told at a party by friends next door to it that owner is a young guy and cost is $45M. Around that corner, 6-8(?) new houses are being built or just finished, all $10M-$20M range. Ralston has some huge houses behind iron gates and long driveways.

I read about high unemployment and sad stories, I am saddened and touched by them. but frankly, I do not know any person or case personally, everyone I know is still doing the same or better, still have jobs or still making millions a year.

DRTYFN 10-03-2003 01:38 PM

Mac,
I worked for a family that owns a couple of houses(one directly across from the monstrosity) on Ralston.
Have you ever seen The Castle? It was on the market 5-6 years ago for about $30M. How about the other huge house about 1/4 mile up the hill that's going through a complete restoration. It's one of the original homes that used to site on (if I remember correctly) 1000 acres. The gates down at the bottom of Ralston were its driveway entrance.

MAC 10-03-2003 02:13 PM

Drtyfn, you know my neighborhood well, these are homes I pass daily, some around the corners, those are my roads. The rich will always be rich, but in America the poor can become rich, most of the richest Americans are self-made men and women. You and I and everyone else has the same opportunities.

Spidey, for few years I have been working 2, 3 or 4 hours day only, taking it easy. On 9/11, I said this is war and this is bad and going to be worse, so I went into battle station(business-wise). It went from bad to worse, but we have done well and the hard work 1-2 years ago pay off this year, it takes 9-12 months to see result, takes time to turn the big ship around. Before it went really bad, we cut, cut and cut, push, push and push; we are doing exceptionally well now, but I keep on cut cut cut and push push and push. I have 100 salespeople, they all tell me the business is bad, I expected that. I called my NYC sales manager last week to congratulated him on his record month and tell him about his record bonus and commission coming soon, as expected he went on and on to tell me how bad the business is in New York city and they never recovered from 9/11. That is how it works in my world, when the going get tough, the tough gets going.

jnsfox - I've read some of your posts and was aware that you were local. I live a stones throw from Seaworld off of Military drive.

I would love to wheel with an H2!

What's the secret to posting pics here?
