The problem for the Americans and Canucks is that Olympic ice hockey is played on an Olympic sized sheet of ice, which is substantially larger than an NHL sheet. The larger ice puts a premium on speed and passing while the smaller NHL ice increases the importance of checking. In Europe and Scandinavia, hockey is played on Olympic sized ice, giving the European players an advantage in the Olympics.

This makes the U.S. 1980 "Miracle" at Lake Placid even more miraculous.

BTW, one of the kids' hockey coaches in Southern California is a former Russian Central Red Army hockey center. There is a display at his rink that shows he has a European Championships gold medal, an Olympic gold medal, he is on the Stanley Cup, he was voted the Oilers most outstanding new player his first year with the team, and he was a center on the Anaheim Ducks when Paul Karia was his winger. Other than that, he didn't do much in the sport [ha ha].

Excuses excuses excuses......

95% of the players of the european nationateams that are in the quarterfinals of the olympics play in the NHL. So they are used to the same rink.

W1N 02-24-2006 04:23 AM

FINLAND owned both Canada (2-0) and USA (3-2)!!!

Most of our players play in NHL, Selanne whos leading the olympic tournament in goals scored plays for Anaheim, Koivu is the Captain of Montreal Canadiens etc etc...

Selanne and Jokinen (Florida Panthers) in the picture...

Why does Team USA look like they have no idea where the puck is and goalie is laying on his back

HummBob 02-24-2006 07:18 AM

Yeah Yeah...SCREW you W1N

Hey Teemu, "The Finnish Flash" started his pro career here in Winnipeg in 1992. He won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in the NHL scoring a rookie record of 76 goals

Yeah I know...I'm a LITTLE bitter that our NHL team took off to Phoenix

Yes, Teemu is probably the best hockey player ever come out of Finland, an awesome scorer. Jari Kurri who played with Crezky for long time was a very good too. I think Calgary's goalie Kiprusoff (Kipper) has been lately in the spotlight the most..

Anyhow I sure bigger rink and different refering policy had something to do that Europen teams have been dominating. Generally national teams are working more frequently in europe than in North-America. Anyhow the teams that come out of NA are always tough to beat and I have to celebrate victory over both

W1N 02-24-2006 09:01 PM

So, down goes Russia 4-0

GO FINS!!!

GeorgeSSSS 02-24-2006 09:06 PM

WOW. It will be Finland & Sweden in the final. Teemu Selanne v. Peter Forsberg. This should be a game for the ages. The best of the best of the best plus the two squads are big rivals.

Program the TiVo.

Teemu Selanne...? Never heard of.
Forsberg, Sundin, Alfredsson and Lidström.
Enough said!
