I have my AVIC-D1 installed and operating except for connecting the VSS connection. Can someone point me in the right direction for this? Do I have to go into the engine compartment?

Also, I am going to install AVIC-D1 backup camera so I need to connect the reverse sensor. Again, I have no idea how to do this on the H3.

Your VSS will be a dark green w/ white stripe either at the cluster (can't rember the pin #) or pin 21 in a blue plug at the pcm in the engine compartment. Your reverse is a light green in the driver kick in harness going to rear. Hope this helps!

When you say in the cluster, do you mean behind the radio? Sorry for being so dense.

If you pull off the driver's side A-pillar molding (one screw and just pull it off), the light green wire coming down the pillar is the backup lamp signal for the rearview mirror. You can tap in there or follow the harness down to the kick panel trip as suggested by kodiakz.

Pin 21 of the I/P cluster is the speed signal; however, the speed signal also goes to the radio connector C2, terminal E. Since you will have the radio out, this makes the speed signal easier to access.

f5fstop, good info (I didn't even think about the rear view mirror trick!!). I always thought that the green/white at the radio was a databus signal and not an analog signal--just did nav in an '03 H2 today and had to go to the cluster. Hmmmmmm always learn something new!

theadlee, sorry if I was not clear--the instrument cluster. Easy to get to and only held in by 4 seven mm bolts. There should only be one plug in the back of it.

I tried the light green wire in the A-pillar like you mentioned and I got nothing. I even tested it with my volt meter in park and reverse and there was no change on this wire. I got to thinking, why would the rear view mirror need to know when the H3 in reverse? Maybe there is some feature that my H3 does not have on the mirror. My mirror does nothting different when the H3 is in reverse.

I endend up running a wire to the engine compartment and tapping in there. Works great now.

I think when you put it in reverse the auto dimming mirror is disabled.Thats the way it worked in my 95 buick riviera.

My fault, I didn't follow the diagram from backup lamps all the way over to mirror. For some ODD reason, the wire color changes at splice 224. It is lt green from the backup lamp switch to the rear backup lamps, but for some really weird reason, that I can't comprehend, it changes to brown at the splice and goes to the mirror.
Sorry for the wild goose chase. GM surprises me everyday....

As for what the mirror does in reverse....if you have the auto dimming mirror, it un-dims in reverse at night, and the module inside the mirror requires a reference (12V) signal to notifiy the module that you have now shifted into reverse.
I believe the auto-dimming mirror is standard, but I might be mistaken.

1. Connector C2 at the radio is the black 12-pin connector, the other connector is a 24-pin.
It should be labeled on the back, be careful, because pin H is also the same colored wire, and it is an audio signal wire.

2. It appears from GM's wiring diagrams that the backup wire splice 224 is in the kick panel area. So, I would look for a brown wire going up toward the A-pillar, and do a check with a voltmeter. Ignition on, in reverse, it will show hot; or you can look for a lt green wire going toward the rear of the vehicle (lights), front of the vehicle (fuse block and brake controller).
