Potty Training
 

Just when you think your puppy is nicely potty-trained, he pooped on the kitchen rug.. :rant::crying:

SIT is ok (mostly), COME HERE is intermittent (50/50), FETCH is not a concept he grasps yet.

How DO you train a 2 months old puppy? Too young to bring to Petsmart (vet said not fully immunized -- not allowed to mingle with other dogs). Any potty and other training tips? Please? Tha!

First, you need to get yourself a real dog. So, you'll need to go back to step one.

Actually, there's a book titled something like "Potty Train your dog in seven days". It's pretty good. Sorry, can't remember the author.

On a related note, it took CP about 2 years to get Ken to stop peeing in the back yard, and he still as "accidents".

Crate training + consistency = teh win

Consistency is the most important part of training/raising/living with a dog.

Train um to use a litter box!...Really! Throw those Little Turds in it!.....Pick up a boat air horn!...and when ya see the little chit!...S H I TS!...Blast the horn!....Wipe up Piss, and put in box Also!..Repeat as needed! :dancingbanana: :shhh: :D

Had sit, inside, outside, stay, come pretty much schooled but now that's out the door since we've been pamering him and his bummed leg.:(

I carry him out to the lawn every morning and evening to piss. But still not one indoor accident for the past month.:excited:

The treat training works great. I trained him the sit command in two days.

I can't tell you how frustrated I am.:rant:

We have been keeping Pea-Pie in the butler's pantry- it's like a little kitchen off our regular kitchen. (kitchen is a weird word.:D) She won't go in there which is great, and she goes outside when we bring her there.....when she "knocks" on the door, after she eats, sleeps....etc.

But as soon as I let her on free roam- even if it is 15 minutes or so.... BAM! She does something. Even if it is a a teeny tiny couple drops of pee- she just has to do it. And I won't find it until later- its normally upstairs in one of the kids bathrooms or someplace inconspicuous where I can't scold her because it's been a while.

I have read that if you keep them with you while inside via a leash you can keep an eye on them and scold, sweep and plunk em where they are supposed to go. I have done that, but she never tries to go in front of me- so it works. But as soon as I let her free in the house.... again, it's a tiny turd or pee spot.:mad:

She was in heat for a month- she started at 8 mos old. I wasn't expecting that. So she was definitely holed up because that was just nasty. Hopefully now we can start letting her roam via the leash again and be more consistent, but dammit...:mad:

It's eaaasy. Just be consistent, take the dog out every 2 hours or so during the day. Keep it in a cage at night, one that isn't too big. That way they will cry and try to get your attention before they will want to sleep on their pee/poop. It's how they learn to tell you they have to go out, otherwise you'll have a dog that knows to go outside, but doesn't know how to tell you.

You could get one of these, and make the dog press it everytime you take it outside so it has more options.

My dog knew all the basic commands before he stopped going in the house too, but he had a confusing puppyhood..being at work in an inside/outside environment. Now he knows the name of everyone of his toys, rooms of the house, objects (tv, computer, etc), some people, favorite places (farm, beach, park, etc..), tasks, etc... Fast learner.

Sounds like your dog is either marking new territory or she's pissed because you lock her up at night away from her family. i'd guess it's the second.

The word wrong ( in a strong voice) always worked well for me.

A loud snap of my fingers works well too. Beets yelling at the kids....I mean dog. Used to piss the X off when I did it to my kids in a store. But I never liked yelling at the kids. My son who's now 23 still remembers the snap of the fingers. Even he agree's, better than being yelled at.

Microwave therapy works for kitties, should work for those little squirrel dogs too.:D

Tried that, but other than some singed smell, don't work. Plus the wifey for some reason doesn't like this method.. :giggling:

The puppy is trained to potty outside in the garden, and will do so 90% of the time. It's the other 10% that bugs the heck out of my germ-phobia.

Maybe the problem is we put a box lined with paper in front of his crate for him to potty at night. Maybe paper + grass = kitchen carpet smell? :rant::(

Most dogs do not gain full bladder control until minimum 11 weeks old :( so as stated be consistant, at such a young age you they need to go out after eating,drinking,playing, and first thing when they wake up as well as a few insurance outings every couple hours:) . If you use a crate it needs to be just big enough for the dog, if yours is too big put some form of partition inside to make smaller so if they go they have to sit in it, they wont want to do that. My dogs (one is 13 mo's the other 6 years, father/son my avitar)dont have a signal to go out. they know we go out at 6am, 5pm, and 9 pm they hold it till its time. Good luck:p

I have found that taking them outside often and giving positive feedback(praise, treats) works the best. I think sometimes it is the breed though that makes some dogs hard to potty train. My parents have had several Yorkshire Terriers. They wanted nothing to do with going outside if the weather was bad. If you let them out on a cold, rainy,snowy or windy day they would not leave the porch until you let them back in. They would run right past you and crap on the rug. This happened regardless of how old they were.
I like to call them "sooners". Sooner **** on the rug than go outside.

What type of dog do you have? We trained our Pomeranian in 2 days to litter box train. She never leaves the home... goes straight to her litter box, just like a cat. She was 8 weeks old when she trained in 2 days. She's 2.5 yrs old now. She sniffs her litter to make sure that's her stuff (:giggling: ), then she jumps in. Just make sure your dog has his/her 'stuff' in the area you walk him/her.

My pup was trained in two-weeks, and has never had a setback. Which is nice, since her turds are bigger than most dogs:D
