Re: Ikea to charge U.S. customers for plastic bags
A lot of the stores do it here in Europe. If you haven't brought your own bag or basket, they will ask "how many bags?" and add the cost to your bill. Here in Germany they are really big on recycling as well. We have 3 different garbage bins, and glass and plastic bottles we typically take back to the retailer. And if all this wasn't strange enough, Coca-Cola makes a soda here called Lift (carbonated apple juice drink).

And oh yeah, I've heard customers being charged for bags at Costco in San Fran |

You're right Mountainbiker !! More and more stores in Europe don't even hand out plastic bags anymore or charge you for it! It really sucks.

Re: Ikea to charge U.S. customers for plastic bags
On the other side of the coin every thing that leaves any store (mdse) cost money including bags. If a store is a deep discount type like costco etc then it makes sense for them to charge.
I use canvas bags a lot just so i don't have to recycle or dispose of the stores bags, plus they never break or tear. RYD |

Re: Ikea to charge U.S. customers for plastic bags
When I moved to the UK, I was surprised that I had to pay for shopping bags, but it was not a life-altering transition. I think it took more time to get used to having to bag my own groceries and most Tescos and Sainsburys.
In Canada, there are a few supermarkets that are charging for grocery bags, including Superstore. I usually purchase so little that I can just carry it out. But when I have had to purchase bags, it was just one of those things I did without really questioning it. I guess my point is that it is nothing new to have to purchase shopping bags. I guess when they refer to the United States as the Land of the Free, they did not include grocery bags. GROCERY BAGS DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS! Okay, I'm done now. |
