Roof Rating
I have looked through the Hummer.com site but can't seem to find what the roof weight rating is for the H3.
Only asking because I know someone who bought a Lexus "SUV" only to find out it only had something like a 90# rating and only enough capacity to carry one sea kayak. Nothing like making a $45K mistake...... :giggling: Anybody know the H3 rating? |
Re: Roof Rating
I'm not sure on the rating on the H3.
What do you plan on carrying? What kind of rack are you going to put on? I have carried several hundred pounds with no problem at all. (10 gallons of water, 5 gallons of gas, fire wood, stove and cooking supplies, chairs, colmans shower machine and a roll up table) You can feel it on mountain roads and in high winds though. Use extra caution on side hills when the roof is loaded! |
Re: Roof Rating
I think I remember somewhere that said the factory roof rails were rated 165#. I built my own rack and am guessing I've had 425#+ up there (spare tire, sea kayak, h2o, gas, gear, myself, etc) - no indication whatsoever it can't handle it - and I was jumping up and down trying to get it to break, bend, etc (hey, break it while it's under warranty!).
I would say it's more design of the racks than roof carrying capacity - the rails on the H3 are well designed and seem to be pretty much indestructable. |

Sit on top style Kayaks that weigh from 55 to 70 pounds each. Hoping, IF I get an H3 that I can still carry three of them on top. With fishing tackle, will come to easily 200#. I have all Yakima equipment. |
Re: Roof Rating
I think you shoudl be able to carry 3 Kyaks with no problem.
You can tie a rope to the brush guard and drop a line to the trailer hitch for more stability in the wind etc. |

Re: Roof Rating
for some reason, I'm thinking 500lbs for the h3 roof rack cross bars (combined)...Pretty sure that's GM's #...

I've stood on my Yakima racks without problem. Even on the mega warrior roof rack. The H3 could take 3 sea kayaks no prob. even with some stuff in the compartments. The question might be if the Yakima kayak holders can take a sea kayak with gear in the compartments. |
Re: Roof Rating
From Owners manual;
Notice: Loading cargo on the luggage carrier that weighs more than 250 lbs. (113 kg) or hangs over the rear or sides of the vehicle may damage your vehicle. Load cargo only on top of the crossrails and tie the cargo down to the crossrail support cargo tie-down loops, making sure to fasten it securely Page 2.43 |

I've had my yakima mounts holding my sea kayak w/full gear in the compartments and they held up well (I'd guess total weight of kayak + gear to be close to 100#). I took it on a monthlong trip to Alaska w/the rollers holding the kayak and no problems (and I beat the crap out of it too). Only problem there was that the bottom of the kayak got dents where it was held onto the rollers, wouldn't recommend doing that again :) |
