Grand Challenge II - Unmaned vehicle race
 

Saw an interesting show on PBS last night. Unmanned vehicle race out in the desert. 1 team had 2 entries - both H1's. They came in second and third. Winner had a VW with a different approach to using video cameras instead of lasers to "see" where to go.
There was also a ...forgive me I'm not a military guy, one of those army 3 axel (2 rear) big troop carrier (and other stuff) trucks entered. Called Duramax I think, as well as a motorcycle. Yes, unmanned motorcycle!

Yea! That's the one! Imagine it being driven by software, no driver inside, and heading for you while you're in the stands watching! :) It was pretty cool.

yeah, this is part of the DARPA program by the department of defense. Its been going on for several years now. Pretty cool stuff. A red H1, it hink placed in top 3 again during the last challenge.

Do you know when it will be on pbs again? or any other tv station?

I watched that too, I wish they would have told us what happened to the H1 that caused it to roll back and lose power. The post script said they suspected something had been damaged in the roll over two weeks earlier, but what?

This year they set records and performed very well, I thought the way they passed each other on the course using A.I. only was interesting.

They are trying out a way to do unmaned supply runs and convoys. Great show

in this years competition, the urban challenge, the hummer wont be used. it will be replaced by two Tahoes. The team seems like its really good and is well funded, and they'll probably place at the top again.

They should have this contest in my hometown, everyone here drives like fricken robots with laser eyes anyway......
