Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

Why doesnt GM make a Hummer h2 and h3 in hybrid form? They already have the technology with the tahoe hybrid and this along with the new 6 speeds and displacement on demand, would surely change the public eye of hummers.

The hummer hybrid would stop all the hummer haters and also seriously raise sales of the several year slump of the h2's.

Why not? Think about how many more hummers they would sell, the #1 reason people probably dont buy hummers is gas milage. Thats the first thing people think of when they hear hummer. Even getting 6 more mpg would be a 50% increase and that means buying 50% less gas.

Then throw in some good marketing and commercials and let the world know that hummer with 400 hp and hybrid technology and added horsepower from the electric motors could put it at 500 hp and is now one of the best SUVs for gas economy and make all the hummer haters eat their shyt!

i bielve they wanted to do something like this, problem is hybrid the battery usualyl powers the vehicle to a certain speed something like that. in the article i read about them considering this was something a long the lines of Hummer is a vehicle made to have un surpassed offroad capabilty, if we did this then it would extremly hold back the ability to offroad. I dont remember if it was witht hem making a hybrid or an ethnol or something but thats what i read they saod

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

Well if they give it the exact same engine as the 08 h2, and the 6 speed transmission but it just has the hybrid batteries in addition, it could run the engine on 4 cylinders alot of the time through displacement on demand plus the hybrid battery. They even could have a switch to turn off hybrid mode for offorading if needed.

Also since the escalade is the same engine pretty much offering it in this and they have another hybrid model, that all upscale people would go crazy over. Think of all the celebrities who driver prius which are nothing like all the other cars they drive, they drive it just for image.

Also to note, alot of times when a hybrid model comes out right away they sell for MSRP or over MSRP, sales could double, and be making more money per sale.

You guys are missing something--you sound like a bunch of stingy H3ers. Hummers are about BIG, RAW POWER, and KICKIN AXX OFF ROAD and ON ROAD not saving gas and little green emblems.

Yea but what if you still had that big raw power , still kicked ass off road, but also saved gas, and had even more horsepower with the addition of electric batteries.

it just doesnt pay for to do that, the price ot produce would be extremly high, and the price to but would be higher. Youd be paying way more for that, then you would to buy the regular one and just filling it with gas. and arent they coming with an option on the h2's for 09 for the ethnol stuff??? Im sure theres away around this one, but the engine of the H2 looks sooooo jam packed i dont see how they could fit batteries in there.

GM already makes the hybrid system for a big SUV the tahoe, they could use the exact same system and put it on the hummer and escalade. This wouldnt cost extremely alot, they already have the system.

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

I would never drive a hybrid. I feel emasculated when the mpg gauge reads more than 12! Then I've got to step on it for awhile to get down to 11.8-11.9 or so. If the H2 became a hybrid, I'd have to do something like put a hole in the gas tank or put it in neutral at stops and rev to 6000rpm.

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

The name of the all electric sports car maybe "Tesla" anyway if You go to site it gives a good education on electric power all the time. The thing that impressed me was 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. What really impressed and this most likely could not be applied to H2 case but, they explained that with electric mode you get 100% torque instantly as well as HP. The torque deal is what would help H2's off roading.

Now how to apply this tech. to Hummers will take easily someone allot smarter than me by a long shot. Concept is just extremely interesting. I do not know how much powertrain breakage would increase so hopefully that would be dealt with in design.

The short coming would be distance as the sports car can go about 250 miles i think it said before needing a charge and that included lead footing it allot. I think with the use of braking to generate charging to batteries which is already a working technology as well as a small 4 cylinder or 2 cylinder to charge batteries etc. could make system work on a monster like the H2. The car has 2 forward gears with no clutch needed to shift gears.
Maybe all a pipe dream but, there are enough smart people that this could be made outside GM think tank. Use a 2003 H2 wih real high miles or maybe a donated H2 then some electric car specialists with Hummer engineers or just sharp vehicle people who own a H2 to help.

If it got serious with proven engineers in these fields I would be an investor to a company that developed this drive train system. We would allow it to be used for anyone that wanted conversion. I mean a for profit company not a donor company "not for profit" if you know what i mean.

Most likely pipe dreams but, with gas going to go up again and oil likely to hit $100 a barrel then not likely to come back down anytime soon. This is some info that I get in discussion with friends in the oil and gas industry. They are so sure that they are going back and cleaning out wells that have not pumped since early 1900's, they buy mineral rights then if it will pump 5 to 10 barrels a day they are being put back into production. So far they have not had a restarted well that has not pumped less than 20 barrels a day. It takes a whole heck of lat less money to restart the old wells than drill new holes.

Well just some of what i thought were interesting facts i learned over the last 60 days. I thought the info may be interesting to others that collect info of what seems to be useless knowledge as a hobby like I do. It just keeps some of the old cob webbs cleaned out also just by helping me think of what if or even maybe looking at doing some of this stuff.

Nuts I know but, it is what my friends tell me is what makes me me. Buds tell me they are good at taking someone elses idea and figure how to develope a way to market it but, for the life of them they cannot come up with some of the stuff i do. The electric stuff is not my idea but, an applicaion to H2 as Buds said had not crossed their minds. I only thought it feasible due to some new generation batteries that are getting near to being introduced to the world.

Well enough is enough!!! I promise the men with the little white jackets are not coming for me. Dragon will tell anyone I'm always thinking of stuff outside the edge of the envelope then asking him to sit down with me and discuss if he and the shop boss can look at this to see if we could do it. So they sit and look at me like i just came from outerspace or the shop boss goes nuts instantly with hey let's start working a model or mock up. So i know if i should drop it or continue to motivate them.

In my opinion they already have ruin the H2 by turning the inside into a Tahoe/Escalade. Now you want a Freakin Hybrid.

ITS A HUMMER!!!

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

OK, sorry, I don't have time right now to read the whole post but from what I've read in the past, hybrid electricity and water (fording ability) don't mix. Sure, put hybrid in Tahoe/Escalade or anything else, but hybrid in hummer probably takes away from one of its primary design characteristics.

The short answer is, it’s been looked at and it won’t work for the H2 with out making it into something else. Any car design is a series of compromises that in most cases mean to be very good in one area you must give up something some where else. To improve fuel economy, even with a hybrid drive, you also need to reduce weight, improve aero, and reduce rolling resistance. The Tahoe hybrid has had a lot of changes from the standard Tahoe (aluminum hood and hatch, narrower and harder compound tires, ect…) that are needed to make the Hybrid drive see gains big enough to notice.

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

Unless the H2 in question is for mainly city driving, it'd be a waste of time. The Sierra Hybrid only gets a couple of more mpg. Better to install the new 4.5L Duramax that's planned for '09 with the 6speed transmission. Hybrid's overhyped.

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

I have to agree with Huck on this one.

I think a cleaner, more efficient deisel would be a better answer.

I do think the idea of a better mpg HUMMER is a great idea, BUT, the H2 is a pig! THey would have to put this truck on a major diet and that would jack up the price quite a bit. I don't think it's a matter of just using Tahoe/ Sierra Hybrid parts. The weight and full time 4wd is also a huge factor.

You guys are a bunch of dumbasses. EVERYONE (with half-a-brain) knows that the reason car makers aren't doing more in the way of energy-saving vehicles is because they are being manipulated by the big, evil, money-grubbing oil companies. Wake up and smell the corruption already!!!

Pete

P.S. I work for a major oil company...the above is all in jest. :giggling:

heard they are doing a corvette hybird first, than the H2 if there still in biz .

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

If you want to make the H2 "greener", offer it in a diesel configuration that would give the users the option to filter waste cooking oil to fuel it. Lots of websites tout using two large coffee filters to clean cooking oil, even Mythbusters tried it on a Mercedes with good results.

Otherwise- leave it alone!

Re: Why doesnt Hummer make a hybrid?

truth be told bielve me i would LOVE to pay wayyyyyyy less for the gas, but theres no corruption in it. Its buisness, everyones gotta make money somehow, and when its a "necessity" they can make more money of it.
