Tire wear
 

So I have had my "new to me" 05 hummer for about a week. It appears to have relatively new BFGs on it. The outside of the fronts are starting to feather. It feels like it may have a slight pull but I cant really tell. I am running about 34 lbs of pressure when tires are hot.

I would get the alignment checked. It sounds like it has either a camber or toe problem. Tire pressure sounds ok, you could run a little higher if you want, like 40. If the tires are good then get it checked soon, because if it is off you can ruin the tires prety quick.

Look at the label on the inside edge of the driver door for tire pressure. Mine is 37 PSI. Always check presure when tires are COLD

Yes, you want to check them cold. It wont hurt to run a little higher PSI than what it says on the door. I spent many years in the tire industry, and have watched thousands upon thousands of tires wear under every imaginable condition. The manufacturer recommended PSI usually leans a little to the side of a soft ride. That is how the whole Ford Exploder/Firestone thing came to be. The biggest issue was they were only running 27 PSI in them.

In my experience I have found many times they wear better with a little more PSI. It can also give you a firmer, more controlled feeling, and may even improve MPG, albeit to a small degree.

Just my $.02 based on what I have seen first hand. YMMV.

So the crazy thing... I had an alignment done, which was need and had them put 40PSI in them. My MPG before 10-11. On the way home 14-15.

How can there be such a dramatic change?

Did you reset the Mileage indicator? It will read higher for a while until is has more data.

I did. It seems to have a short averaging cycle. I think I drove it enought that I saw it average down and up and down. I drive it again this eveing and check it again. How many miles does it take?

I have a completely stock 2004 and it will always come back to around 13.1 mpg within a few miles.

13 MPG is all I ever got in my Avalanche Z71 with the autotrack option. And this with Auto track dis-engaged.

I have been resetting my "average MPG" and "fuel used" each time I fill up with gas, and so far it is right on the money with manual calculations; i.e. miles driven divided by fuel pumped. If I don't reset it, it starts to differ from manual calculations.

So, now I just reset at each fuel and go with what it says. So far with mixed county road driving and town, it is getting 11-13. We made a trip across WA state towing a trailer and it got 13. The trailer was about 1800-2000 pounds, and speeds were 55-65. We were on state roads not freeway.

I have a whipple SC that has a voltage booster on the fuel pump. I am going to check a tank against the trip meter and see if it is the same as the avg.

Your H2 being out of alignment does wear tires out prematurely, but it also causes drag. Less friction better MPG, it might not be noticable though, .1 or .2 of a mile

Yeah, after a few miles the computer says we are getting about 10.5. I do not think that is too bad considering I have a Whipple SC on it.

Your front tires will wear faster on the outers, because of cornering. That is unless you put in more pressure than suggested on the door plate.

I usually ignore door plates, and see what max pressure the tires are stamped with. Then run at that pressure. i.e. 44psi cold for the OEM BFG All-Terrains.

For the H2, I run them at 40psi, and they wear pefectly even. And the ride is nice. Less tire heat also due to less sidewall flex. Tires will last longer....Plus, unlike the Ford Explorer issues mentioned above, if one looses a bit of pressure, there is still lots of air in the tire to spare.
