All,
Never been a fan of car dealerships. Always felt they were a last resort to ANYTHING, but as autos become more complicated it becomes necessary to deal with your local dealer. So, where do you draw the line between what you do yourself, what you have done @ your autoshop, and what you have done @ the dealer, when it comes to your H2? I know it's different for each person, based upon tons of factors, just curious..... |

Dealerships always charge too much in my area. I have a small autoshop that's worked on a couple of other vehicles i've had...now that my warranty is gone, I'll probably be taking it there unless I can do it myself...

I'll do fluid changes, filters, brakes, and other minor stuff. My days of doing head gaskets, trannys, exhausts, etc are over! I could be talked into a SC install though.

As far as I know, all dealers in all areas charge too much. I have a friend with a shop that does all the work for the local auto auction so the are experienced with everything from a Lambo to a Prius. I take my vehicles to him if it is not covered by warranty and I always know that I won't get screwed. Used to deal with a Cadillac dealer years ago that whenever the vehicle was in for service there was ALWAYS something else wrong when we got it back

I also think dealers overcharge. But certain things I'm willing to pay for if they're done right - I don't trust Jiffy Lube for my oil changes just yet. So I'll have routine maintenance done at the dealer. Anything that deals with my tires I'll have done at Discount Tire or the Max. Any more aftermarket work, it'll be done at the Max.
I have the capability (physical and intellectual) to do the majority of maintenance myself, but I just don't have the time or tools. Stacy |
Even though the dealer is usually more than a local shop they have more to offer. Sometimes they will offer pick up and drop off service. They will warrenty thier work. They will install OEM parts. Thier techs are trained and skilled on your car or truck components. I have GM dealer here that I have always taken my GM cars to. They aren't cheap but I'm always happy with results. If there is ever a problem they will take the car back immediately and rectify the problem. I'm sure not all dealerships operate this way but sometimes you get what you pay for!

I have to say its a 50/50 split. the amount of work I want to do VS the amount I will do. the second think is...is it under warrenty? if so it goes in. right now I have parts waiting and no time to drop off my ride.

I do all my own maintenence and repairs. The only time I had the dealership do something, I felt I had to take a shower afterwards, plus it was shoddy work. The benefits of doing it myself include knowing my vehicle intimately plus being prepared and able to fix anything on the trail short of a blown engine/trans. It's a great feeling...
