Ok..just got back from the dealership. HELP!

I had to take the H3 in for several things. The main problem is there is a ticking noise, not too loud, but it seems like it's coming from the front end whenever I let off the gas (b/c of the engine noise I can't tell if it's doing it while I speeding up) Speed doesn't seem to matter. The faster I'm going the quicker the ticker but not really any louder.

The tech. that looked at it today said that he didn't have a clue and was gonna have another tech. look at it tomorrow. Any ideas???

So, I get to pimp an Ultima.

Sometimes....when you start wheeling these trucks, they just start making noises.

Check the tires for rocks first.

But checking the front diff wouldn't hurt

Dealer gave me a Sentra twice as a loaner, no fun.

HIHummer,
Mine just started doing it as well. It's barely noticeable but I can stil hear it. Sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side somewhere. I keep checking for rocks in the tires but nothing. As yours, the ticking on mine also speeds up the faster I go. I'll have them check it when I take mine in for it's oil change.

Does it change with engine speed or vehicle speed? A clicking with vehicle speed would be a rotating mass, could be as innocuous as a rock in the tire or it could be a ujoint/cv joint/hub bearing.

NOT GOOD!!

As of today, it looks like they are going to be replacing the pinion gear and the front axle bearings! I'll be heading up there at lunch tomorrow to learn more.

ANY OF THIS SOUNDING FAMILIAR?? coughbebecough.

That's what I said right before cussin' like a sailor! And to top it off...I ran the Altima into a parked Mustang. Scratched up the bumper(maybe this should go under the "I'm Stupid" thread).

I WANT MY HUMMER BACK!

This really got me thinking if Newbie was onto something in regards to the build date????

You just wanted to be like us West Coasters.

Sucks about your truck. Hope they're quick with the repair.

No, not nearly the same. And get more info on exactly what is being done. You don't just replace the pinion gear without replacing the ring gear, and the axle bearings aren't really related to replacement of the pinion.

funny sh#t! i had to laugh out loud, a little bit of pop came out my nose!

I'm curious as to what this is too as i'm experienceing the same noise. sounds like passenger side in the foot well area. kinda like the hvac fan but doesn't make a diff if the fan is on or off. better not be differential related, or bearing related for that matter. i've only got 5000 hard miles on it!

HIHUMMER 04-27-2006 05:27 PM

Ok..in my girly terms b/c I'm still learning:

The red arrow thingy (ring?) has the teeth chipped and the base of the teeth have hairline cracks. Now, the blue little thingy (pinion?) has scratches and scars on each tooth and 1 of them actually was broken in half. They are replacing both pieces. Actually would have been fixed today, but someone dropped the new "ring" and broke off 2 teeth.

Now...on the outside of the whole casing that holds all these gears, on top there was something that turns. a yoke maybe??? well, he put this gauge on top of it and told me that the needle should move between 10-20 degrees when he rotates it. So he moves it and it doesn't even get to 5 degrees. What is that all about?

Is any of this making sense to anyone? I'm so sorry..I just don't know what's everything is...yet?!
