I am looking for opinions. I just interviewed in Dallas for a job that would allow me to locate in either Pheonix or Dallas and commute to the other. If I took this job I would be moving out of So Cal (100 feet from the beach) so either place is too far from the ocean, but the job looks like fun.
Bottom line, which is abetter place to live,Dallas or Pheonix?

Phoenix

H2Finally 06-28-2005 06:46 PM

Phoenix, just because we already have waaaayyyy too many Texan owners

Orbital, been a while!

Orbital H2 06-28-2005 06:48 PM

been busy, you know the story...
Went sailing in Canouan back in April, just delivered $46m worth of tese equipment and looking for the next move.
have you been off road lately?

HummerNewbie 06-28-2005 06:49 PM

Never been to Phoenix but have spent a lot of time in Dallas so I would have to go with the Big D. A friend of mine transferred from Phoenix area to McKinney (Northern part of Dallas area) a few years ago and loves it there. Not sure if he lives in better though.

PhOEnix. Texas is for homos.

Plus, you'd be so close to Moab that you could practically go every weekend.

You should check on the availability of housing, i heard there is a Lottery system in Phoenix and only the winner's of the lottery can purchase a house, you just dont make an offer to whatever is for sale.

It's never hit 115 in Dallas.

Phoenix is also a 3 hour drive to Page, Arizona and Lake Powell. Much hotter but drier than Dallas. Current wildfires are scorching just north of there between Phoenix and the South Rim Grand Canyon.

Dallas can't hold a candle to all the southern Utah wonderlands you can get to in a day's drive or a long weekend, and of course you pick'm casino locales in Nevada.

Dallas, hands down. You can find anything you could want in the Dallas area plus with DFW airport and it's location it's easy to get anywhere else.

I like Phoenix but if I were to choose to live between the two, the decision would be easy for me. One other main thing is the political/business/personal climate that Texas protects more aggressively.

We had a house in Colleyville a few years ago and considered living in the Dallas area full time.

Hummertech 06-28-2005 08:26 PM

My opinion may be biased, but here it is anyway.
Big D. Here are the reasons.
1. Housing is very cheap here compared to the national average. You can buy much more house for your money, and I've been doing a lot of research on this. They are prediciting that the housing prices will catch up to the rest of the nation in the next 5-10 years. In other words. Buy cheap, sell high.
2. Money, lots of money in the DFW area. I read there are over 80,000 millionaires in the DFW area, more than any other metroplex in the country.
3. Weather. It is hot in summer, but it is not humid. I don't care what anybody says. Tell them to grow up by Lake Michigan and tell me it's humid here. Also, plenty of lakes, restaurants, amusements, places to go, things to do.
4. Dallas Cowboys are here, and they have been to more super bowls than any other team.
5. Great schools in the burbs.
6. Low taxes when comparing to other major cities.
7. Texas has been voting solidly republican the last decade, not this on the fence **** like Arizona.
8. George Bush is from Texas, John McCain is from Arizona. Need I say more?

I can add to this if you need me to.

HummerNewbie 06-28-2005 08:38 PM

From what I have seen housing is pretty good in most parts of Dallas though some areas are very high for what you get. It is that way every where though. I know my friend there just bought his house for right at $200K and I couldn't believe it. You would have to spend at least $400K here to get the same house

H3 Buyer to be? 06-28-2005 08:47 PM

I just bought a house in Scottsdale, near PHX, about 9 months agi. If I wanted to buy the same house now, I could not afford it. The market here is CRAZY>>> If you see a home for $485,000 (2100 square feet 3 bed, pool, 3 car) you better bid $500K or or more, because you won't get it.

We offered 10K more on one house, and did not get it... My point is, the market here is blowing up. Good this is your house will increase in value for sure no matter where you move in this area.

Hummer Tech
thanks for the input
1) is a compelling draw to this area, and from the little i have seen, I am tempted to bet on this. Tempe area is rather pricy now.
2) tough to compete with, but probably has to do with #1, #6, #7
3) I grew up around Lake Michigan, I understand humidity. Dallas is more humid than Pheonix, but hopefully tolerable
4) this is a big negative in my book, I am a hard core Packer fan
5) good for resale values. I don't have kids
6) this is a big swing factor for me. I could buy a lot of toys for the H2\
7, 8) are certianly a big bonus. not overly happy with W now, but he is still my man.

Hummertech 06-28-2005 08:53 PM

If you grew up around Lake Michigan than the weather is definatley tollerable. I love the summers, the much longer summers than up north. And the winters are great. In the summer, ever time the temp goes above 85, the humidity plummets. It actually sometimes feels worse at 84 degress than 98 degrees.
As far as the packer fan thing goes, what's wrong with you? If you are a true Packer fan than you know who Charles Martin is. I hate that guy. The Bears would have continued to be good in the 80's if it wasn't for his cheap shot. And as far as the cowboys go regarding the Packers, you could always wear your Farve jersy into a sports bar during the Cowboys bad years and laugh at the Cowboy fans. I have seen a few people doing that the last few years. Ya bastards.

I do not agree with the cheap shots, play hard, but play fair.
If I end up down there I will have to wear my Farve jersy during football season.
