Any gurus out there. I have some birds that appear to be one or the other. The ivory-billed is the bird that, until last year, was thought to be extinct. Both are the largest woodpeckers in the U.S. The Pileated was on the endangered list at one time.

Anybody know any details about these birds? I have them on video.

Well, I am a certified bird specialist. I used to lead nature walks in Sea Shore State Park and had to complete a program. I know, I'm a Nerdburger.

Can you post stills from your video?

I did a little comparison for you. If you don't have good visibility of the head, look for the white markings on the wings.

Either way, both are exciting.

it's the video. They are out about 150 yards give or take and it was getting dark. I've gone through and tried to pull stills and I can't get a good one.

It to me like the Pileated. But then again it could be an Ivory. They are so similar and all the pictures of the Ivory and Pileated are different. I would send the link in, wouldn't it be great.

I videoed them while hunting. Thanks for the link. Everything fits for the Ivory-billed but I still can't be sure. I am going to try to get some better pictures and video. They are extremely skittish and are hard to snap a picture of.

The video you shot was great. In fact I commented on it while watching it, I would have been all over the place. Do you think you can find them again?

I am pretty sure these are two younger birds. This was in a field that borders a white oak bottomland. I see them about every year while hunting, but this is the first that I have seen two males running around together.

Once it gets further into winter and more of the leaves get off the trees, I'll be able to get better close-up shots of them to verify what they are.

What's sad is that they were in a tree that was torn up by the hurricane that's about 50 yards from my stand. I could see them perfectly except I was looking up through the canopy of the cedar tree I was in. The camera wouldn't focus on anything but the cedar limbs.

I think you have Pileated Woodpeckers. Watching the video, it looks like your birds have quite a bit of white markings on their heads, and not much white showing on their bodies.

That white underside makes it look like it is indeed the Pileated. When they fly you can see splotches of white on the underside of the wing. With the Ivory-billed, the entiriety of the feathers along the trailing edge of the wings are white.

Thanks for the pic Klaus, that's the first one I've seen that looks closer to what I think they look like.

I'll be hunting the same area this weekend and see if I can get some better shots of them.
