I once had a small crack in my tooth and had our family dentist in CA, whom my parents swear by, check it out. He said I needed a crown and was ready to do it right then and there, but when he couldn't tell me exactly which tooth was cracked I bolted... half-way home before the spit bib hit the ground.
Flash forward 15 years later (last year), crack has clearly gotten bigger and more painful, so went to a local dentist here in WA and he said I didn't need a crown at all and was explaining how dental technology had progressed so much over the last decade. Woohoo, I always knew it paid to procrastinate some day. I'm not sure what he did, but it was a much simpler procedure and the tooth has been great since. Maybe it was some of that nerd stuff that Craybas rattled off.
Now, I have also heard some bad things about this particular dentist, so I'm not going to recommend him, but I do think a 2nd opinion is a good idea.
