It's a big difference between stealing your spare (or rims) and stealing a car. Unless the thief has knowledge on the Hummer, the jack case is a great place to hide the key. It's not really practical to always keep it with you, and it's something you need with the car just in case.
Unless you have a $5k 28" chrome spare rim on the back, I doubt anybody would put much effort into getting it. And taking time to find a key that might be in the car isn't smart, if they are wheel stealers they'll have a wrench with something to get any lug nut off right away.
Of course if someone is stealing stuff from inside your truck (stereo, tvs,...) and they come across the lug key and deceide to take your spare also, that'll probably be the lesser of your problems.
