In 1992, Honda released a Civic that had a VTEC engine tuned for economy rather than performance. It wasn't any uglier than a regular civic. I don't recall the exact figures but I am pretty sure it had better fuel economy than the Prius. Hybrids are just a fad. Perhaps something truly useful will be developed from the technology in the future but for now they are just a neat albeit ugly toy.
