As for muscle loss....depends who you talk to. After riding for a couple hours and pushing hard, your creatine-phosphate and glycogen storage is fairly depleted....many say the proteins in your muscle tissue begin to breakdown and you essentially start "burning muscle".

You might be using the nutrient storage but not breaking down muscle tissue unless you are suffering from some kind of necrosis.
