You asked where it is designed to go, not if it is recommended.
I think of it this way, if someone actually breaks in, finds the key, and steals my spare, they could have removed it without the key, and besides, I'm well insured. (And if they attempt to do it and get caught, I always have loved the look on someone's face when confronted by the owner or the police.)
I guess my biggest problem at my age is trying to remember where the damn key is if I need it. To be honest, that is one thing I have not worried about; I worry more about the idiots who run stop signs in the morning commute to work.
