Michiana is the common name given to the area of Northern Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan which comprises 11 counties , the core being La Porte, St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall (in Indiana) and Berrien (in Michigan. The area is the center of the RV (Recreational Vehicle) and Manufactured Housing industries, as well as the Band Instrument industry, with a number of other communications and pharmaceutical companies, and AM General (manufacturers of the Hummer).
South Bend is also home to the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College, two of the most prestigious Catholic universities in the country. The area population is made up of a number of immigrant groups, including Hungarian, German, Polish, Irish and Greek, with a growing Asian and Hispanic population in the 1990's. There are also Amish and Mennonite communities in nearby Nappanee and Shipshewana.
