I think getting folks in, driving the diesel next to the gas, maybe 15%-20% would pick the diesel. Why? For towing, mileage improvement, power, biodiesel, brawn. If GM wants to do a great market research project, they should bring in some of the diesels from HUMMER worldwide, mod the emissions, slap them into LHD, and put one at every or select dealers, not for sale, but demo. Then see how many orders come in. If they make the break-even, then they should consider the green light. I realize it's not that easy however.
And of course they've got the aftermarket mod, but for the price, I don't think people even consider it (I wouldn't). But a diesel is a great engine, though you've got to drive it first, in a vehicle you like, and then I think it's a no-brainer. That's why I think they should put demos out there, because that first drive destroys any preconceptions that someone has about a diesel.
I don't mean to argue with you FStop. I just can't understand GM's stumbling block. I don't think the argument is there.
