I would start with banging of the starter(it usually does work and is easy to get to on the oldies.)I would replace the starter If it happens more then once .
If your overhauling the truck get a new battery,cables(neg and positive ) and a new starter. couldnt hurt inspecting the wires on the selonoid(it usally is on the top of the starter and comes with a rebuilt one)

The 442 had starting problem I thought it was from the starter getting to hot. It seems some corosion got in under the sleave of the cable, when I sliced it open the wires were green,My brother made me some new ones with a larger gauge wire.I had no problems for 10 years now
sits 2 months it fires right up
