I did it to make sure I had a clean rough surface to work with, under the clear coat the aluminum is nice and rough and makes a good surface to work with, I only did the grill a couple of days ago, and seems to be holding up well, Also this stuff works well because you dont have to worry about streaks or pooling, it goes in with that nice textured finish, I like the semigloss contrast to the high gloss paint.
