I've used my winch rarely in self recovery. Maybe a dozen times in 10 years of wheeling. Mostly when I owned the Jeep. On one of them I used both to pull the H2 out from side sliding further down an abandoned mine pit when I got caught in a miniature landslide.
I've used my winches mostly to recover wheeling buddies or just being a good samaritan during the winter months. There are trails where it is impossible to turn around to access your front winch to help out one who gets stuck behind you. This has happened a lot.
Or strapping on a trail with multiple ledges or tight turns. West coast wheeling is not as easy and friendly compared to the wide open super traction surfaces of Moab.
It's not used as much as my front, but it's definitely a godsend when the need arises.
I'm surprised GayBob would make such a statement. I'm sure it's only because he's just hurt about something else. No block of wood to lean on.
