Hello everyone, I visit this board every once in a while to check up on what's happening in the Hummer world. Has anyone read the July edition of Popular Mechanics? On page 46 there is a stub called "Picking up the Hum," here is the text:

"Hummer will offer a standard-size pickup box on a new model in the H2 line for 2008. As shown here, the vehicle will have a four-door cabin, but thanks to a wheelbase stretch of about 12 in., there will be room for a 6-ft. cargo box that otherwise would encroach on rear-seat space. Other changes include wider and deeper rear doors for easier ingress/egress. Note that the gas tank, as indicated by the filler cap, will be nestled in front of the rear axle. Up front, the fender, hood and bumper are smoother and more rounded. Decorative boxes atop the cowl are gone and the hood now offers two pull handles on its middle surface."

Anyone have more info on this? The postage-stamp-sized sketch looks awesome!

Sorry if it's been posted before.

Can you copy the article or provide a link?

In my understanding, stretching the wheel base and so forth will change the break over and approach angles unless the truck is another 12 inches (or more) off the ground and the tires are the size of a 747's. Since that won't happen, the changes discussed in that article mean that the streched version might have an H2 name plate, but it won't be a real H2 -- -- just a poser. I hope GM doesn't do it and dillute our brand.

Just my opinion.

Best regards,

George

I'd like to hear from the guys that understand approach/departure/breakover angles -- -- I don't fully.

This is a nice looking truck, but based on this image it isn't going to approach the off road-worthiness of the H2 SUV or SUT or H3 is it?

Looks to me that those that buy this will be buying it for the name not its capabilities like the H1, H2 and H3. Of course there are those that buy those for the name too.

The GM marketing rep. for the east coast told us that this was coming, and the names wouldn't be successive anymore- H6,7,8...etc. I was a little tipsy at the time but he seemed very excited about it. I did a photo-chop of one with a two door a while ago. I think it looks funny with the 4-door and standard size bed- Like it should be amphibious.

I wouldn't mind having one. Then again, I wouldn't take it to the same places we go now.

The pickup is not designed to be "as capable" off road. If it were, it would just be another H2, a SUT perhaps. The idea behind it is to offer an off-roadable pickup. I would love to have one and if they make it with the Dmax it might be my second Hummer. It is not meant to be a replacement of the H2 suv or sut but as a different vehicle just as if you were to go buy a Ford F250 crew cab. So, the approach/breakover/departure stats are not as critical as what the vehicle is originally designed for, hauling ****. It's a compromise. You have to give up some of the H2's off-road prowess in order to make a pickup.

If they'd offer a Duramax, it'd be on like Donkey Kong.
