At the dealership today they told me the reason my low tire sensor was going off was because of my spare. It is monitored also and should be 50 PSI. Is this true?

that's weird...
i don't think there is any connection in the spare tire area, i haven't check it yet though...

Should't be. It is a four channel system that recognizes four sensors. If the spare sensor was monitored, then when you rotate the tires with the spare, no programming would be required.
The four channel system does not monitor which corner, just four unique serial numbers; so when you rotate the spare to a corner, the system sees a new ID.

I rotated in my spare due to sidewall damage and it had to be reprogramed .

I would have the tech read the service manual:
"The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system notifies the driver when a significant loss of tire pressure occurs in any of the 4 tires.
Important: The vehicles spare tire is equipped with a tire pressure sensor; however, the system does not monitor the spare tire pressure. The purpose of this sensor is to allow the spare tire to be included in a tire rotation. For more information, refer to Tire Pressure Sensor Learn."

I dread that TPM message when I install my new wheels/tires tomorrow! Has anyone else defeated the warning? It said SRVC TPM for the first 6 mos I owned it b/c when the dealer swapped on the chrome rims they didn't set it up right and it took me that long to go back (125 miles away)

My TPM experience follows:
I know the stupid Senate/House is always passing bills to help idiots not do stupid things to themselves - all at our expensive. I have a digital gauge and always check pressure at least once a month or before any trip. It now seems most Americans need a politician to help them with this simple task.
After discussing with the service department and successfully resetting my TMP world, here is what I know WRT Resetting the TPM after a tire deflation:
1. The dealers never use the procedure documented in the USER MANUAL - too hard <grin>. They connect a dianostic device, check all the tire pressures and push a button or play with a magnet (hmmmmmm, Mr. Magnet? - more to look into).
2. After deflating a tire and moving the spare to the ground etc. the following is require to reset the TPM Tire Pressure Low Whining DIC (Driver Information Center).
a) Check tire pressure on all 5 tires to make sure all is well in pressure land.
b) Set parking brake
c) Turn on Key, then quickly turn headlamps on and off 4 times
d) 2 horn beeps sound to signal you are now entering the 5 minute calibration mode. The User Manual is wrong since the TPM ICON does NOT FLASH as documented.
e) Go to left front tire and inflate or deflate for least 10 seconds
f) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
g) Go to right front tire and inflate or deflate for at least 10 seconds
h) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
i) Go to right rear tire and inflate or deflate for at least 10 seconds
j) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
k) Go to left rear tire and inflate or deflate for at least 10 seconds
l) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
M) Turn the key to loff to lock position - most people would conclude the reset should be done at this point.
Notes:
When you now turn your key back on, the DIC is still whining after all your hard work. The trick is you have to actually drive the vehicle before the TPM reset is finalized. The programmer needs to be drawn and quartered on this fine mistake. The manual should at least note this requirement.
You don't have to touch the spare other that make sure pressure is up before you start.
If you take more than 5 minutes, you have to start over with the ignition off.

Mine went off this morning for the first time. Well, first time other than when aired down for wheeling that is. Warning turned off in half a block. Maybe it went off because it was so cold out this morning, 60 degrees

Tool is a frequency generator that wakes up the reed valve inside the tire pressure sensor. Older styles, such as used on C5 vettes, did use a magnet to wake up then sensor, and any large magnet would work.
Dealers are given the special tool.
Just remember, if you rotate the tires, and do not rotate the spare to the ground, you do NOT have to reset the TPM system. It is only looking for four identified sensors, and those are already on the ground..
As for politicians, I would love to have Ted Kennedy come out and check my tire pressures. However, I will not allow him to drive the vehicle if we are going over a bridge.

Proved it, when I rotated my tires in March.
This system is not looking for a particular sensor at a corner, it is looking for four sensor readings from four identified sensors.
We did one at work, and no re-learn (program) was required.
If the system was like that used on Vettes, Caddies, etc., where it displayed readings for each corner of the vehicle, then mixing them around would require a relearn.
However, if you add the spare into the mix, and remove one of the four on the ground, the systems does not recognize a sensor (spare) and requires the re-learn (program) procedure.
