Default Has Your H3 Engine Overheated?

There have been several reports of H3 engines overheating, so I thought I would try to get a better picture of the problem. Some report it only at low speeds or stopped. Other have reported it while climbing grades. Let us know what your experience has been.

May I politely ask, what type of info will be derived from a web forum? How many H3 owners are there on this site versus how many H3s are out there in service?

Just curious...

Who knows, after a week traveling in the desert next week, I may change my poll answer; but don't think I will have too.

Never even close. And I've driven in several situations where you might expect it.

I guess a real test will be in Moab in August. Hot, low speed, and a lot of driving in 4low.

I live in Arizona. Its has been between 90 at night and 105- 116 in the afternoon where I live. I drive about 30 miles home in the afternoon with some hills where the auto trans on cruise shifts down twice on each hill. Been watching the temp closely and have have only seen between1/2 and 3/4. I did some city driving today (stopped to get a 12 pck) and did not get even close to the 3/4, in fact same temp as climbing some small hills. It was 109 today. Thats my story. I personally think from driving other vehicles in the desert that I should not see this much change. My TRD yota ran same temp in winter, summer, and pretty close to same temp up or down hills on the way home from work. Still think there is nothing else like it , hummmmmmm.

twas 109 on the mirror guage today (who ever says all it does in the NW is rain?).

Was driving on the freeway, windows down, a/c on full blast, temp went from 1/2 (never been above that for 8 months) to right around 3/4. I drove around town in traffic, dropped back to 1/2 (still around 104 or so).

In non-hellish temps, if I'm on the freeway, it will be 1/2, then I'll floor it, drop a gear or two, and the temp gauge will drop, sometimes all the way <1/4. Soon as I let off the gas & rpms drop, the temp gauge goes up (and dyslexic, no not I am).

NOTICE, I didn't say the temperature. I'm too lazy to dig out my FSMs to see where the temp gauge is, but I know in other vehicles I've had the location of the gauge can affect up/down on the guage. I'm not overly concerned about it (yet) but as the summer wears on I'll definately be keeping a close eye on it. Maybe I'll put in an oil temp gauge - that will be a lot more accurate reflection of what the engine temps are...

Since you will be in the desert. Park it when it's 110+ with the front facing away from the wind and the a/c on, then let it idle for 15 to 30 min.

Let us know how it goes.

That will be easy to do, since I will be down on the White Rim trail for a day. Every time I have been there, the only wind is from lizard farts, and in July, the weather is always above 105, and sometime hitting 110.
I'll let it idle a few times and see what happens.

I live in AZ to and i never turn the AC off, im in pretty nasty traffic all the time and i do notice that the temp gage will rise a little above the normal position but it is friggin hot here! I do wounder after the truck is much older will it start to over heat but thats just my issue because the last truck i had over heated all the time, at this point in my life if it over heats Ill trade it in for a new truck!!!After the warrantys up ill trade it anyways.......The only thing about the H3 i cant take is i miss having a truck bed(redneck girl...i guess). Ive needed that a couple of times now after going to pick up crap from home depot and a over size grill for my husband. I got outside and looked at the H3 and thought to myself "S****"I had to go home and get the Chevy from my husnabd and had to give up the surprise.....When and if they come out with a H3/truck thats my calling!!!!

I made a 160 run to Boston through the Berkshires today on I-90 with the cruise at 70 mph and the temp stayed in the normal range all day. Air temp got to about 85.
