I'm going to have my rims Powder Coated black here pretty soon.

But in order to do that, I have to bring the guy the Rims only.

I'm kinda doubting that Discount Tire will let me leave my Truck in their garage up on the lift for 12 hours.

So anyone have any suggestions?

Suggestion 1:
See if your dealer will let you borrow (rent? for some token amount?) a set of take off wheels.

Suggestion 2:
Support vehicle on 4 real heavy duty jack stands - none of your discount parts store stuff - on a concrete surface well away from any activity that might disturb your vehicle.

Suggestion 3:
Purchase set of take-off wheels cheaply and have them powdercoated.

How much to powder coat the rims? By the time you add the charge for removing the tires from the rims, and then re-mounting the tires and balancing them, you're probably talking some "real" money...

What about the spare? Probably want it powder coated too?

I'd sure love to see pictures of them when you're done. I'll bet they look VERY cool!

I think that "msd's" suggestion #3 might be the one I'd go with, along with the spare too... Then after all's said and done, you could sell the extra rims? That way no "down time" or time spent waiting up on jack stands...

Of course I don't have any jack stands, so I'd have to go buy some. Which probably aren't cheap... Maybe I could buy them and return them the same day?

TheGoodHummerMan, the price for Powder Coating is $25 per tire, and I do plan on having all 5 tires done. I don't think remounting the tires and balancing them is going to be very expensive, but I suppose I should at least check into it before I start.

I'll have pictures up when it's done for sure. But it won't be until after Memorial Day Weekend.

Jim,

I'd be surprised if the tire changing/balancing doesn't cost more per wheel than the actual powder coating costs. Maybe if it looks as nice as I imagine it will, I'll wait to COPY your idea until I am ready to replace my tires, and not pay EXTRA to dismount/remount them...

Well, I'm taking my Wheels to Discount Tire to remove them from the Rim and to remount them after the Powder Coating.

To this day they have never charged me a dime for anything.

All my Tire rotations have been free. I've had my wheels rebalanced there before. Fixed flats. And even if I'm too lazy to check the pressure in my tires, I drive up and let them do it.

I'm sure this will be a different scenario, because they will actually have to replace the valve stem, but I'm not expecting the work to cost much at all.

Hmmmmm, are you by any chance royalty or something? Does your Dad own Discount Tires?

Man, I must be doing something wrong! I get nothing for free and in fact I usually end up paying for things that I never even get. Just last week a guy charged me for giving ME a hard time...

Maybe it's different in Texas? My only dealings with the Arlington area was back when I had a CD invested in a S&L in Arlington and the S&L folded. Maybe I should change my name from TheGoodHummerMan to Rodney Dangerfield?

I think I paid $5 a valve stem the last time I had any tire work done. Come to think of it, that was when I bought Michelin tires. Maybe it was just a case of the French screwing an another American around? At any rate, I would think that breaking down and dismounting those gigantic 35" ties would cost EXTRA, if anything. If you get it done for free or very cheaply, all I can say is Phooey! You might want to be sitting down when they tell you how much they'll charge?

$148.90 for 5 tires, Taking them off the rims, and putting them back on, balancing, and new valve stems.

Yep, you were right. And I have no idea why the hell it costs this much.

Actually it was going to cost around $250 when the guy did it up on the calculator, and then he said that was a crappy price, and then just basically pulled a number out of his ass on what to charge me.

I may check a couple other places for prices. Although this guy was pretty cool on the phone. I may see if he'll let me keep my car on the lift in his shop while the rims are powder coated. That alone would make it worth it to me.

Check some local independent tire shops, the ones around here are $10-13.00 for mount and balance.
I get tires switched around often and the independents could let u leave vehicle up in the air.
Another option is a set or tire tools and change them yourself then take to a dealer to get the free balance done.
These 35" tires and larger are very easy to change by hand.
I've done 16 semi tires in an evening before.
